    Job Description

    SCOPE & IMPACT:

    In this role, the intern is responsible for assisting the Health and Safety Manager with planning, coordinating and promoting the plant safety, workers’ compensation and occupational health programs for the site. The position provides support to the site operations leadership in the following areas: safety, occupational health, worker’s compensation, and Health & Safety training and development.

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

    The position reports to Plant Health and Safety Manager.

    DURING THE INTERNSHIP, YOU’LL:

    • Assist Health and Safety Manager with:
      • Required safety training topics, including new hire orientation and the contractor safety program, and maintaining the associated records
      • Emergency response drills, and the required Fire Extinguisher and Emergency Evacuation training.
      • The evaluation of OSHA required plant safety programs.
      • Incident investigations and reviews.
      • Conducting required industrial hygiene monitoring, review of data and prioritization of corrective actions following the sampling.
      • Ensuring all machinery has a Lockout/Tagout Procedure, and assisting Health and Safety Manager to develop Lockout/Tagout Procedures for any machinery that does not have a LOTO procedure.
      • Facilitating monthly safety committee meetings.
    • Work with plant team to improve the effectiveness of the behavior based safety program (walk and talks).
    • Maintain strong floor presence through the engagement of hourly work force.
    • Anticipate, identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices through work site knowledge, employee interactions and work site inspection.
    • Implement, administer and advise others on hazard controls and hazard control programs.
    • Measure, audit and evaluate the effectiveness of hazard controls and hazard control programs. Provide recommendations for correcting unsafe work practices.

    THE EHS INTERN SHOULD HAVE:

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and assignments to meet objectives.
    • High level of motivation and ability to work independently or in a team setting.
    • Direction setting ability, including implementation, execution, and follow-up on policies, procedures and strategies.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Pursuing a bachelor’s or masters degree in an accredited Safety Sciences program.
    • Targeted graduation date range: December 2023 through May 2025
    • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. (O-I does not sponsor working visas for internships)
    • Must be able to pass a physical and fit test that is compliance with OSHA respiratory protection standard
