    The Principal embodies the mission of Old Mission Peninsula School, which is to “provide an active,

    meaningful, and challenging educational community where learning is collaborative and accessible to all

    students and is focused on continuous academic improvement and social and character growth.” This is

    achieved through focus on our seven C’s: Children, Curriculum, Crew, Culture, Class Size, Campus, and

    Community. In keeping with the school’s mission, the Principal fosters the traditions, relationships, and

    practices that determine the school’s climate and culture. The Principal is responsible for the overall

    management of the school in accordance with the board’s policies. The Principal is the spokesperson for

    the school with all its internal and external constituencies, including students, parents, faculty, staff,

    alumni, neighbors, business community, governmental agencies, and local, state, regional, and national

    educational organizations and accrediting agencies.

    Though much of the work is properly delegated, the Principal has ultimate and overall responsibility for

    board relations, curriculum and instruction, student life, business affairs, assessment, admission,

    enrollment, advancement, and representation of OMPS in the greater community.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Valid State of Michigan teaching certificate in Elementary and/or Secondary Education.

    Minimum of three years of teaching experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Current or in process State of Michigan Administration Certificate.

    School leadership experience.

    Board Relations

    The Principal advises the board but is not responsible for governance matters just as the board advises

    the Principal but is not responsible for management matters. Together, the Principal and board form an

    equal partnership in running the school, each in their respective spheres of management and

    governance. The Principal is an ex officio, non-voting, member of the board.

    The Principal:

    • Reports directly to the Board President and the Academic Committee.

    • Keeps the board informed of all matters relating to the school through reports at board meetings

    and immediate communication following all major school events or happenings.

    • Provides data to assist the board in its work.

    • Makes recommendations to the board for approval of the operating and capital budgets, including

    all categories of income and expenditures.

    • Seeks direction from the board on new initiatives.

    • Assists the board in setting board and committee meeting agendas and discussion topics.

    • Staffs the board’s strategic planning process.

    • Sets annual goals for his/her performance in conjunction with the board.

    • Provides materials for the board to use in his/her evaluation.

    • Sees that the board records and minutes are properly filed, and otherwise assists the board in its

    works as requested.

    Curriculum and Instruction

    • Develops and implements an innovative, high-quality, creative educational program that sets high

    expectations for every student.

    • Sets ambitious school goals for student achievement and performance and hold staff members

    accountable for achieving results.

    • Fosters professionalism, collegiality, and ethical conduct in the faculty, staff, and volunteers.

    • Stimulates and participates in the dialog about teaching and learning at the school.

    • Hires, supervises, evaluates and dismisses all faculty and staff members in concert with the ESP.

    • Promotes a culture of continuously improving teaching practice through professional development

    and collaborative planning amongst the faculty and staff.

    • Provides for the professional development, including training in effective classroom management,

    of the faculty and staff.

    • Coaches, develops and grows leaders from within the organization, giving opportunities for staff

    to develop new skills in leadership and improve their craft.

    • Uses data to inform practice and drive decision-making and instruction at the school.

    • Supervises all aspects of the school’s academic program and ensures the school is aligned with

    Michigan benchmarks and national standards.

    • Monitors Special Education students in various settings and provide feedback.

    • Supervises state and national testing, and communicates details appropriately to staff and

    families.

    • Ensures all state required compliance reporting is completed.

    Student Life

    • Organizes student activities and extracurricular opportunities.

    • Administers the school’s discipline policies and standards of conduct in accordance with school

    policies set forth by the board.

    • Supervises the school’s support systems, such as counseling, academic support, before and after

    school programs, health and wellness, etc…

    • Promotes a healthy student culture in and out of school. Should be a welcoming presence visible

    to students and their families and caretakers as they enter and exit the school each day.

    • Provides leadership at all-school gatherings, including assemblies, sporting events,

    performances, etc.

    • Provides for character education and ethical teachings in keeping with the mission of the school.

    • Reports student progress to parents on a timely and helpful basis.

    Business, Finance, and Building Operations

    • Understands and supervises the business functions of the school, including budgeting; monitoring

    and reporting income, expenses, investments, and cash flow; maintenance of appropriate records;

    and assisting the school’s auditors.

    • Advises and guides the Board as necessary regarding financial needs for the school.

    • Oversees all employment and HR matters in conjunction with the ESP and the finance committee,

    such as contracts, salaries, benefits, job assignments, job orientation, performance evaluation,

    retentions and dismissals, personnel records, employee handbooks, etc.

    • Oversees all areas of operational compliance including: health and safety laws, teacher licensure

    and fingerprinting and all federal and state workplace regulations.

    • Oversees the operation, maintenance, and cleaning of the building and grounds.

    • Oversees preschool, aftercare and summer camp operations, including building issues, staffing,

    and communication items.

    • Plans and executes all major capital purchases, repairs, and building projects.

    • Oversees the school safety programs including building security, emergency procedures,

    transportation regulations, tornado and fire drills, etc.

    Enrollment and Marketing

    • Supervises and assists the enrollment functions of the school, including recruitment programs,

    internal marketing, external outreach, website development and maintenance, and information

    dissemination.

    • Supervises the seat lottery process when applicable.

    Advancement and Fundraising

    • Plans and executes the school’s fundraising programs.

    • Assists the Old Mission Peninsula Education Foundation in identifying, cultivating, thanking, and

    communicating with past and prospective donors.

    • Oversees the school’s relations with its alumni through communications and attendance at

    special events.

    Community Relations

    • Supervises all volunteers.

    • Maintains a presence in the community.

    • Represents the school to the media.
