PATH is a global organization that works to accelerate health equity by bringing together public institutions, businesses, social enterprises, and investors to solve the world’s most pressing health challenges. With expertise in science, health, economics, technology, advocacy, and dozens of other specialties, PATH develops and scales solutions—including vaccines, drugs, devices, diagnostics, and innovative approaches to strengthening health systems worldwide.
Digital Square, an initiative within PATH's Center of Digital and Data Excellence (CoDE), helps to build a world where everyone can access digitally enhanced health care. Conceived from the lessons of the inefficiencies and redundancies of investments in digital technologies, Digital Square brings global and regional actors together to create a new way of thinking about, and a new way of doing, development.
Digital Square seeks an experienced digital health professional to innovate research initiatives, which have been prioritized by investors and project leadership. The research findings are meant to be catalytic not only for the project but also in the digital health ecosystem. The activities in the consultancy include some research where the ecosystem currently lacks information, including common evidence base around what business models enable widespread adoption of digital health goods and services. THIS ENGAGEMENT IS EXPECTED TO START ON JANUARY 6, 2020 AND END ON JULY 31, 2020.
The consultant is expected to work independently but will consult with the Executive Director of Digital Square and the Manager of Partnerships.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Digital Square is a unique program currently receiving funding from 14 investors, and with the opportunity to receive funds from new investors including foundations, multi-laterals, and bi-laterals. The consultant will contribute to and inform Digital Square resource mobilization efforts by conducting research on existing and priority new investors, aligning their interests in the digital health ecosystem with the goals of Digital Square, specifically our initiatives outlined in our project roadmap. The bulk of this activity includes desk research, as well as key informant interviews with investors and other partners in our space.
Building off this research will be a deeper look into future “disrupter investors” for the digital health sector at large. Digital health—and global goods investments specifically—struggle to attract investment from traditional philanthropists who are more interested in direct health impact than in global market shaping investments. It also struggles to attract investment from private sector who has low confidence in a financial return in low-resource settings. However, an emerging cohort of ‘next-generation’ philanthropists are dissatisfied with current philanthropic structures and may be interested by kind of impact made possible by smart investments in digital health. In particular, select market analytics may help build confidence in the value of investing in global goods and bring new philanthropists to this space.
Using ethnographic and marketing methods, the consultant will profile a cohort of next-generation philanthropists to identify who has a track record of showing interest in this sector, what motivates them, what problems they care about and are trying to solve, and what information they typically need in order to make philanthropic decisions about a domain area. In addition, the consultant will identify a subset of these philanthropists who may be candidates for a catalyzing a large-scale, positive disruption to the sector in 2-3 years.
Finally, the consultant will identify and recommend a communication strategy for reaching new investors, based on identified preferences and case studies of successful models of influence. The consultant is expected to coordinate the communication strategy recommendations with the Digital Square communications team.
