Health Fitness has an exciting new opportunity for a full-time/benefits eligible (40 hours per week) AQUATICS MANAGER at our client community center located in BETHEL, ALASKA! Bethel, Alaska is a community of roughly 6,500 people, located at the mouth of the Kuskokwim River, 40 miles inland from the Bering Sea and 400 air miles West of Anchorage. First established by Yup'ik Eskimos, Bethel is now the largest community in Western Alaska and the 9th largest in the State of Alaska. Accessible only by air and by river, Bethel functions as the transportation and service hub for the 56 villages that make up the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta Region (YKDelta).
Southwestern Alaska is different from the mountainous Alaska most people think of. The YK Delta is made up lakes, river tributaries, marshy tundra, and rolling hills. River travel is a primary means of transportation and residents hunt, fish and gather berries on the rivers and tundra throughout the year. These activities put residents in constant contact with water and drowning rates for the region have been recorded at 5 times higher than for Alaska as a whole, which has one of the highest rates of unintentional drowning nationally.
The aquatics area of the center includes a six-lane competition-sized swimming pool (25 yards), two-story water slide, a shallow pool with zero point wheelchair accessibility, and jetted hot tub. Currently, the facility is open for swimming almost 100 hours a week and offers a variety of swimming and fitness classes to members of the Bethel community. Visit our website at ykfitness.org for more details about the facility.
As the Aquatics Manager, you will be helping reduce drowning rates by developing, implementing, and delivering aquatics programming and community outreach programs designed to teach swimming and water safety to participants of all levels and help the community develop safety consciousness around the water. You will be responsible for the organization of the aquatics program, the supervision and training of the swim instructors and lifeguards, assisting the youth programs in and out of the water, and maintaining the positive, clean atmosphere of the facility.
THIS POSITION REQUIRES EVENING AND WEEKEND HOURS.
