    PURPOSE:  Working within our Ophthalmology Clinic at the Ohio State University Eye and Ear Institute, the Student Assistant, under the supervision of the Physicians, provides high quality, accurate and compassionate patient care to a diverse patient population. The Student Assistant assists the physicians, technicians and other clinical staff in the appropriate delivery of patient care services by performing visual fields, ophthalmic imaging, patient rooming and initial visual workups in addition to having the willingness to adapt to an evolving job description and expand responsibilities in a growing department.  

    REQUIREMENTS:  High school diploma and/or equivalent.  Part-time or full-time University or College level student status required. This position necessitates a minimum of 8 – 12 hours per week. Evidence of organization and problem solving skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities. High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. Work effectively with individuals and team. Must be able to interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization.

    PREFERENCES: Experience in a medical clinical practice preferred.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Interacts professionally and compassionately with patients daily
    • Explains and performs visual field testing on patients
    • Performs ophthalmic imaging on patients
    • Assists with rooming of patients
    • Disinfects, stocks and maintains examination rooms
    • Sterilizes Equipment
    • Performs initial visual workup, chief complaint, history, vision, pressure with documentation into Electronic Medical Record
    • Performs related patients service when necessary and as requested
    • Communicates and reports to the Ophthalmic Supervisor
    • Attendance, promptness, professionalism, the ability to pay attention to detail, cooperativeness with co-workers and supervisors, and politeness to customers, vendors, and patients.
    • Other duties or special projects as assigned.
