    Peninsula Community Center, a ministry of Peninsula Covenant Church (PCC), builds community by providing personal, healthy, and meaningful connections through aquatics, fitness, tennis, and community programming. PCC is a vibrant and forward-thinking church located in Redwood City, dedicated to serving our community and making a positive impact through our outreach programs including our Community Center. PCC employs over 150 seasonal and part-time staff to support various community efforts.     PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE The On-Deck Supervisor provides leadership for all swim instructors and lifeguards and serves as the primary point of contact for resolving on-deck issues during the Spring Swim School sessions. This role is responsible for providing swim instruction, assisting with lifeguard responsibilities and ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all. This job is for Spring programming which runs on weekends beginning on Saturday, March 21st through the end of May.

    PRINCIPAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS The On-Deck Supervisor works closely with the Aquatics Coordinator, Aquatics Director, and other aquatics staff, including swim instructors and lifeguards. This position also interacts with members, guests, and other Peninsula Community Center staff to provide exceptional service and maintain a high standard of safety and instruction.

    WORKWEEK

    Commit to working at least one weekend day a week starting on March 21st.

    Attend mandatory training on March 15th, April 26th, May 22nd and May 31st.

    Seasonal position running March–May; hours and shifts vary, with weekly hours ranging from 5-10 hours.

    Potential to turn into a Summer On-Deck Supervisor job with 8-20 hours a week.

    SUMMARY OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Oversee daily on-deck operations, ensuring swim instructors and lifeguards are supported and collaborate with all Aquatics and Center staff to provide excellent service to members and guests.

    Be prepared to respond to emergencies, following PCC’s Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and document accordingly.

    Coordinate coverage for absent staff, including arranging substitutes and adjusting schedules as needed.

    Support the implementation of swim lesson curriculum, and help evaluate and develop swim instructors and lifeguards.

    Communicate scheduling changes early, secure appropriate substitute coverage when unable to work a scheduled shift and assist with coverage when available.

    Act as the primary point of contact for resolving on-deck issues, schedule conflicts, member complaints, and facility needs—escalating issues to aquatics management when necessary.

    Other duties as they pertain to and aid in supporting the ministry's principal objectives.

    PROFILE SKILLS AND CORE COMPETENCIES

    Leadership skills with the ability to supervise, support, and guide swim instructors and lifeguards in a fast-paced on-deck environment.

    Strong communication skills, including clearly setting expectations, providing constructive feedback, and interacting professionally with staff, members, and families.

    Sound judgment and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to respond calmly and effectively to on-deck issues, schedule changes, and emergencies.

    Ability to multitask, stay organized, and maintain awareness of multiple on-deck activities simultaneously.

    Dependable, punctual, and accountable, with a strong sense of ownership over assigned shifts and responsibilities.

    Professional and positive demeanor, with a commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for swimmers and staff.

    EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

    American Red Cross Lifeguard certification required.

    Strong swimming skills and experience in swim coaching, swim instruction, and working with children required.

    One year of prior experience working at Peninsula Community Center is preferred.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Must be in the water and sun for extended periods.

    Must be able to hold children (ages 3-12) in the water, stand in the water, swim 300 yards continuously (breaststroke or freestyle), and tread water for two minutes without using arms.

    Must be able to perform all American Red Cross Lifeguard rescue skills, including diving up to 12 feet, treading water for extended periods, CPR, rescue breathing, in-water spinal backboarding, and using an AED.

    Must be able to lift 30 pounds occasionally and 15-20 pounds frequently.

    DOJ background clearance required.

    Must adhere to and model PCC’s Safe Church policies.
