Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
The primary purpose of the Pharmacy Technician, Oncology position is to apply skill and knowledge of pharmacy practice and Clinic procedures to complete the technical functions of chemotherapy and non-hazardous medication compounding. The highest quality of patient care and the appropriate use of resources are achieved in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
SOME KEY FUNCTIONS INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
• Performs duties in the IV room that will involve setting up sterile products for dispensing, making appropriate record entries and reviewing IV administration records.
• Maintains the highest degree of accurate productivity and performance while being extremely aware of the specific contribution to total patient care.
• Manufactures uncomplicated and/or complicated parenteral chemotherapy preparations to be delivered in the finished form such as large volume, small volume, infusion syringe, infusion pump or other modality as required.
• Prepares complex chemotherapy products.
• Correctly interprets physician's orders, selects and measures appropriate ingredients, mixes ingredients in a safe and effective manner, inspects the final product for accuracy, suitability and elegance, labels the product, maintains records of the manufacturing process and prepares the product for delivery.
• Uses either standard protocols or best judgment to determine an accurate expiration date for each product prepared.
• Maintain open lines of communication with physicians and consult with them about medical care, policies, and procedures.
• Manage and maintain drug inventory and clinical supplies.
• Prepare drug orders daily based on clinic schedule and confirmed appointments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:
High School Diploma and relevant work experience
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
Certification-Pharmacy Technician
Preferred: Chemotherapy Certification
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum two-three years Pharmacy Technician experience
Preferred: 3 years oncology pharmacy mixing in a busy clinical environment
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, research protocol guidelines, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and professional correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of physicians and employees.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret charts and graphs.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Proficiency working within Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, to include the creation of presentations, charts, graphs, and workbooks containing formulas and complex data sets. Preferred experience working within an EMR system. OncoBilling experience highly desired.
