ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
Blind Children’s Learning Center (BCLC) has successfully fostered a spirit of independence and integration into the sighted world for 58 years. On average, over 250 families of children with visual impairments from birth to age 22 participate in BCLC’s comprehensive programs each year. The Center is recognized as a model of excellence in early intervention and is used as a training site for interns and residents from Colleges and Universities throughout Los Angeles and Orange County.
To further demonstrate a standard of excellence, BCLC has attained Charity Navigator’s coveted 4-star rating for demonstrating financial health and commitment to accountability and GuideStar’s Platinum Status to reflect an increase in publicly reported outcomes.
MISSION
The mission of BCLC is to prepare children with visual impairments for a life of independence through early intervention, education, and family support.
STRATEGIC PLAN
BCLC recently announced a bold new strategic plan to evolve its services to meet the changing needs of children with visual impairments, and their families. The plan will allow BCLC to double its impact and reach 500 children throughout Orange County by 2022.
THE OPPORTUNITY
To meet the ambitious mission and programmatic objectives of BCLC’s strategic plan, the Development Department drives and stewards the organization’s relationships with its funders working to secure foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, and individual giving to support BCLC’s growth strategy.
Reporting to the Development Director, the Development Associate effectively manages a growing annual giving program and the accompanying database donors. The Associate pursues strategic opportunities and supports revenue growth of BCLC’s signature special events. The Associate also executes multiple direct mail and e-appeals, social media campaigns, reporting and analysis, list management, and relationship management. In addition, the Associate works closely with the Development Director and Executive Director on the major gift program, particularly in relation to prospect research and donor stewardship.
Scope of Responsibility:
Oversees annual and monthly giving program, including designing materials and crafting messages
Assists Development Director with individual and corporate prospecting efforts; customizes appeal packages as needed
Produces customized reports and updates letters aimed at renewing and upgrading donors
Works closely with Development Director to build special event strategies and implementation, including management of volunteer planning committees
Leads cultivation and speaks on behalf of agency to local Lions, Rotary, and similar community groups
Engages corporate partners through meaningful learning opportunities
Oversees and maintains impact data excellence, social media presence, and other special projects as needed
Manages grants calendar; provides relevant program and administrative staff regular updates related to submission and reporting deadlines to institutional donors
Creates newsletters, e-news, and other marketing materials according to annual communications schedule
Coordinates client visits as needed with purpose of developing marketing materials and parent participation in peer fundraising campaigns
Produces customized reports and update letters aimed at renewing and upgrading donors
Leads donor data processes and presents options to transition agency towards streamlined gift entry processes within 12 months
Drafts thank you letter templates based on constituency and campaign type
Supports President/Executive Director in planning monthly board meetings, communications, and ongoing documentation
Coordinates staff notices, meeting reminders, and distribution of printed materials
Schedules, attends, and takes minutes for committee meetings as needed
Updates GuideStar and Charity Navigator profiles with relevant information on annual basis
Complies with organizational guidelines and health care laws and regulations
Attends Monthly All Staff Meetings
Attends regular meetings with Supervisor
Conducts self in accordance with BCLC’s Mission, Vision, and Values at all times
Performs other job-related duties as assigned
Knowledge & Skills:
Uses decision-making skills and judgment to work independently to resolve problems; able to identify those situations that requires supervisor intervention for a solution
Possesses a strong attention to detail; uses skill and judgment to ensure written and verbal outputs are clear, accurate, grammatically correct and of appropriate tone
Possesses superior verbal and written communication and presentation skills
Able to manage multiple projects in a team environment as well as individually with little supervision
Possesses strong project management and prioritization skills with an affinity of producing high-quality work
Able to maintain confidentiality; possesses commitment to professional ethics
Possesses a commitment and passion for the agency’s Mission, Vision, and Values
Maintains high proficiency in Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and CRM software (i.e., Blackbaud, RazorsEdge, ETapestry)
Has a proven understanding of fundraising and event marketing and promotions practices (preferred)
Education & Experience Required:
Bachelor’s degree preferred
At least two (2) years of related, nonprofit experience involving development responsibilities required
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed
