    Job Description

    The Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority seeks a Supervising Open Space Technician to provide infrastructure and leadership to the Authority’s land management staff, serving as boots in the field to maintain the natural spaces and provide high quality service to the public and partners.

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

    You are a hard-working and motivated individual with experience supervising a team of four or more. You enjoy being outdoors and working with your hands. You are a driven individual, who will use common sense and a strong personal commitment to your work to lead a team of field operations staff to success in supporting the mission of the agency.

    Your attention to detail is an asset in scheduling work and planning projects, as well as documenting the day-to-day activities performed by your team. You want to lead a team in working safely and efficiently. You have a desire to work closely with assigned field operations staff, including mentoring and holding regular meetings and check-ins to ensure that they are afforded the support needed for their personal and professional growth and development.

    With an emphasis in natural resources, this position will serve as the liaison between the Authority’s resource management policies and plans and the on the ground implementation by Field Operations staff. You are solution oriented and will work to maintain compliance with the Authority’s policies and with guidelines from local, state, or federal agencies. You have hands on experience with working lands and will easily build relationships with the Authority’s partners in agriculture, grazing, and land management services. You are comfortable to represent the Authority at a variety of events including regional meetings or presentations at Authority Board and Committee meetings.

    Strong logistical planning skills will be a benefit as you work to create and coordinate special access days and programs on Authority lands. You will work with appropriate cross-department teams to ensure successful events that respect the land and create a positive experience for the public. You are capable of performing and supervising a wide variety of semi-skilled carpentry, building, and field maintenance duties using hand and power tools as well as performing routine maintenance and repair of assigned tools and equipment facilities.

    Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will possess the skills, education, and experience needed to be successful in this position.  For example:

    • Supervising experience with a team of four or more.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook.
    • Experience working in agriculture, grazing programs, or natural resources.
    • Experience in construction, maintenance, and/or repair of parks and/or open spaces required.
    • Confident written and verbal communicator.
    • Demonstrated leadership and capacity to provide coaching and support to staff.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, Basic First Aid and CPR certification.
    • Ability to lift and carry materials and objects weighing up to 60 pounds.
    • Must have experience in the use of chain saws, weed whip, brush cutters, pumps and other small power equipment.
    • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather and to work in and around poison oak.
    • This position is required to take and pass a pre-employment physical and background check.
    • This exempt position may be required to work evenings and weekends.

    Additional Information

    COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

    The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is $79,957 to $97,189 annually*, depending on experience and qualifications. To complement this salary, we offer a robust benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and their dependents – we cover 100% of the cost for these premiums. We participate in CalPERS retirement programs as well as offering a separate 457 Plan for tax deferred retirement savings. A basic life insurance policy is provided to all eligible employees with the option to purchase additional personal insurance benefits. (*A cost of living adjustment of 2.9% is expected on July 1, 2020.)
