    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Operating Engineers Local 324 Fringe Benefit Funds, the benefits office for the union of heavy equipment operators, heavy equipment technicians and stationary engineers in Michigan, is hiring a PENSION BENEFITS COORDINATOR in its Bloomfield Township headquarters.

    The Operating Engineers Local 324 Fringe Benefit Funds office processes the hourly fringe benefit contributions on behalf of the over 14,000 members of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324 across the state of Michigan. The members’ health care, pension, annuity accounts, vacation pay depend on the proper payment and processing of these funds. We ensure that the benefits due to these participants are received on their behalf in a timely manner. The PENSION BENEFITS COORDINATORS service participants’ needs pertaining to the Defined Benefit Pension (fixed monthly benefit) and the Defined Contribution (annuity type benefit) plans.

    In this position, you will be on a small team specializing in pension related duties. This team is incorporated within the Fringe Benefits department of the Operating Engineers. This is your chance to be in a small, tight-knit group within a very large, state-wide organization.

    The Operating Engineers Local 324 represents heavy equipment operators and building engineers in the state of Michigan. Road builders, crane operators, boiler operators, mechanics, pipe line builders and many other classifications are represented by collective bargaining agreements negotiated by Local 324. The Fringe Benefits Office collects, processes, and administers the fringe benefits as outlined in these agreements.     KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Answering phones to assist fund participants with questions or needs regarding their Defined Benefit (DB) or Defined Contribution (DC) fringe benefits
    • Understanding and interpreting Plan documents and SPDs
    • Calculating and processing DB and DC benefits including QDROs
    • Maintaining participant records
    • Processing of loan applications and payments
    • Preparation of information requests by attorneys

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Familiarity with Taft-Hartley Multi-Employer Pension Plans a strong plus
    • Customer service and empathetic attitude
    • Strong interpersonal skills a must
    • Analytical skills – specifically at a technical level and understanding to be able to convey complex pension rules and regulations to participants
    • Skills at writing including grammatical proficiencies
    • Organizational skills
    • Proficiency with web portals
    • Proficiency with word processing software including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
    • Technology savvy
    • Collaborative problem-solving and analytical abilities
    • Ability to multi-task
    • Ability to take detailed notes
    • Ability to independently execute tasks to completion

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • At least two years clerical experience
    • Some post-secondary education preferred
    • Familiarity with ERISA, REA of 1984, and PPA of 2006 a plus
