We are seeking experienced Ophthalmologists to support a long-term, on-site federal healthcare engagement at a major medical facility in Columbia, South Carolina.

    Job Description Summary

    The Ophthalmologist will provide comprehensive on-site ophthalmology services, including direct patient care, consultative services, and on-call coverage. This role supports a structured, mission-driven clinical environment serving Veterans and requires strong clinical expertise, reliability, and adherence to federal healthcare standards.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide comprehensive ophthalmology care in outpatient and clinical settings
    • Perform diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical ophthalmology procedures within granted clinical privileges
    • Conduct patient evaluations, consultations, follow-ups, and care coordination
    • Participate in rotating on-call coverage, including evenings, weekends, and federal holidays
    • Respond to on-call consultations within required response timeframes
    • Accurately document all patient encounters and care activities in the electronic health record system
    • Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement activities, and required staff meetings
    • Comply with all facility policies, clinical standards, patient safety, and regulatory requirements

    Required Experience

    • Minimum of three (3) years of post-residency clinical experience in Ophthalmology
    • Experience delivering comprehensive ophthalmology services in hospital, clinic, or large healthcare system environments
    • Experience working in regulated or structured healthcare settings preferred

    Education & Certifications

    Required:

    • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
    • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Ophthalmology residency
    • Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Ophthalmology
    • Active, unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state or territory
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications
    • Active DEA registration and National Provider Identifier (NPI)

    Preferred:

    • Fellowship training or subspecialty experience (e.g., Glaucoma)

    Work Location & Arrangement

    This is an on-site position located at the Columbia VA Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina.

    Schedule & Position Type

    This is a full-time, 1099 independent contractor position.
    Standard clinic hours are Monday through Friday, approximately 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with rotating on-call coverage that includes evenings, weekends, and federal holidays. This is a long-term engagement with potential for multi-year continuity.

    Compensation Range

    Compensation ranges from $158 to $182 per hour , with an annualized equivalent of approximately $330,000 to $380,000 , depending on experience, qualifications, and on-call coverage requirements.

    Benefits Package

    This is a 1099 independent contractor role. Contractors are responsible for their own benefits and tax obligations. Compensation reflects the independent contractor structure and the scope of responsibilities associated with this role.
