    Job Description:

    This position is responsible for the installation, alignment, repair, overhaul, and testing of marine mechanical systems aboard ships and in shipyard environments. Outside Machinists perform complex mechanical work on propulsion systems, auxiliary equipment, hydraulic systems, and shipboard machinery while ensuring all work is completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with specifications and industry standards.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Perform machinery overhaul, installation, testing, and repair of shipboard systems and equipment.
    • Work on winches (electric and electro-hydraulic), anchor windlasses, steering gear, air compressors, pumps, motors, and associated mechanical systems.
    • Perform pump and motor alignments using precision measuring tools and alignment procedures.
    • Repair and troubleshoot hydraulic systems, valves, reduction gears, diesel engines, and generators.
    • Perform bearing fit-up, installation, and precision assembly work.
    • Repair and maintain boat davits, cranes, brakes, resilient mounts, emitter belts, sliding pad eyes, and associated deck machinery.
    • Perform work on aircraft elevators, RAST track systems, louvers, and underwater hull strainer plates as required.
    • Conduct gas turbine repairs and support specialized propulsion or auxiliary systems.
    • Remove, install, and repair OD boxes and related propulsion components.
    • Perform shafting repairs, alignment, and installation for both fixed-pitch and controllable-pitch systems.
    • Remove, install, and repair propellers and rudders.
    • Use precision measuring tools including micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, and alignment equipment.
    • Operate hand and power tools including grinders, drills (portable and stationary), hydraulic jacks, porta-powers, presses, torches, and torque wrenches.
    • Select and use appropriate tools for mechanical tasks including wrenches, sockets, pliers, hammers, and specialty tools.
    • Perform mechanical troubleshooting and repair in shop, dry dock, and onboard vessel environments.
    • Work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and shipboard machinery spaces.
    • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with technical specifications, safety regulations, and quality standards.
    • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas at all times.
    • Work independently or as part of a team to complete assigned tasks.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Minimum of 5+ years of outside machinist, marine mechanical, or shipyard experience required.
    • Strong experience with shipboard mechanical systems, propulsion systems, and auxiliary equipment.
    • Proficiency in machinery alignment, installation, and overhaul procedures.
    • Experience with hydraulic systems, diesel engines, reduction gears, and pump systems.
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and work specifications.
    • Experience with precision measuring tools and mechanical alignment equipment required.
    • Strong commitment to workplace safety and adherence to shipyard procedures.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Excellent attendance, reliability, and strong work ethic.
    • Previous shipyard or NAVSEA experience strongly preferred.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull
    • Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and ship structures.
    • Ability to work in confined spaces, machinery spaces, and onboard vessels.
    • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods
    • Must be able to work in varying environmental conditions including heat, cold, wind, humidity, and wet environments.
    • Must be able to wear required PPE including but not limited to hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, respirator (if required), and fall protection equipment.
    • Must have strong visual, hearing, and physical coordination required for precision mechanical work.

    Work Schedule & Hours:

    • Full-time position averaging 48–56 hours per week, including weekends as required.
    • Overtime and extended hours may be required based on project needs.
