    Overair is developing the next generation of commercial air-transportation. Our core team is hard at work bringing Butterfly, its all-electric air taxi vehicle, to market. Butterfly leverages 20 years of development and patented high efficiency VTOL technology in order provide the most compelling aircraft across the air-mobility ecosystem.

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    We are seeking an experienced aircraft System Safety Engineer to lead the safety analysis process for the Butterfly aircraft. This role requires a candidate who thrives in a high paced environment and who is ready to play an integral role in advancing the next generation of electrically powered vertical lift aircraft.  The ideal candidate will be a seasoned safety professional who gets excited by the prospect of solving problems that haven't been solved before; someone who truly believes that the job of an engineer is to make the impossible, possible, and who is passionate about innovation, about safety, and about getting things done. 

    ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Define: The Senior System Safety Engineer will lead the analysis of the Butterfly system architecture, development of the safety analysis data and reports, and identification of the safety certification requirements for the program.  In addition, they will support development of the aircraft certification basis, identification of appropriate means of compliance, and development of the formal compliance demonstration program. 

    Key Activities: 

    • Define the certification safety requirements for the aircraft and take ownership of executing the overall system safety engineering process in support of aircraft Type certification. 
    • Lead and mentor other engineers in the application of the system safety engineering process to the aircraft design activities
    • Generate program level safety analysis requirements, methodologies, and compliance data using commercial safety analysis software tools.
    • Evaluate the aircraft and systems design in accordance with the methods described in ASTM F3230, SAE ARP4754A and SAE ARP4761, and use those analysis results to help inform the iterative development of the design.
    • Support development of the aircraft certification basis with various regulatory agencies (FAA, EASA, etc.).
    • Identify appropriate means of compliance and support development of the overall certification compliance program.
    • Support development of issue papers, certification plans, test procedures, reports, etc..

     

    Intrinsic:  The role will require flexibility and a level of comfort working in a fast-paced development environment.  The projects and priorities may vary from week to week; to operate effectively in this environment the candidate should have robust aircraft development and certification experiences to draw upon.  The role will include frequent interface with engineering management, our customers, certification authorities, DERs, operations, procurement, external suppliers, and fellow engineers, requiring exceptional communication and negotiation skills.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in engineering or a related discipline, plus at least 15 years of professional experience in certified aerospace product development, or equivalent experience/combined education.
    • Expertise with ARP4754A safety process and ARP4761 and/or ASTM F3230 safety analysis methods, with extensive direct experience developing related analysis documents.
    • Expertise in one or more commercial safety analysis software tools.
    • Hands-on experience in commercial aircraft development and certification processes, from concept through TC issuance, obtained at an aircraft OEM.
    • Broad cross-functional domain knowledge across several technical areas of the aircraft with deep technical expertise in developing aircraft and system-level hazard assessments, safety assessments, fault tree analysis, etc. 
    • Past experience supporting development of the aircraft certification basis, means of compliance, compliance matrices/checklists, certification plans, safety analysis, test plans, test cards, compliance reports, and other compliance artifacts.
    • Robust understanding of flight operations, flight deck procedures, operating procedures, regulatory requirements, and the interdependencies between them and the design.
    • Knowledge of the historical regulations, advisory material, standards, policy and orders pertaining to aircraft certification and safety engineering.
    • Understanding of the Issue Paper process, Special Conditions, Exemptions, etc.
    • Hands-on experience with 14 CFR 23 amendment 64 and related Means of Compliance standards is highly desirable.  Familiarity with 14 CFR 27 is desirable.
    • Experience working directly with the FAA, FAA DERs, and/or ODA UMs, or experience as an FAA DER/UM is highly desirable. 
    • Outstanding communication, negotiation, and people skills.
