    Job Description

    Classification: M5 or Sub

    Principal ObjectiveUnder the supervision of the Fitness Director, the Fitness Instructor provides group fitness instruction, monitors and educates Center members and staff on fitness and safety, and maintains a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for class participants. Supports the Fitness program through assisting in holding a standard of program excellence and continually striving for personal spiritual growth.

    Principal Roles and Responsibilities

    Fitness Class Instructor: Teaches scheduled classes, beginning and ending on time; provides adequate warm-up, exercises, stretching, and cool down. Instructs members on effective workout methods; explains proper techniques, demonstrates exercises; identifies different muscle groups, and teaches appropriate methods to strengthen specific muscles. Prepares appropriate equipment, music, and handouts for each class. Must have a high degree of energy, be physically fit, and have the endurance to complete the workout.

    Fitness Expert: Working knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology and training principles. Assists members and staff, answers questions, and maintains a positive exercise experience for members and class participants. Keeps Fitness Director informed of member and facility needs. Ensures that fitness program safety standards are met, and that department and facility policies are adhered to.

    Fitness Class Developer: Possess up to date knowledge of group fitness teaching strategies and the incorporation of music, tempo, cueing technique, and rhythm. Ability to use choreography and music skills to motivate class participants. Ability to cooperate and work well with other staff members.

    RequirementsPhysical Demands: This job requires exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly. Frequently required to walk, stand, sit and talk or hear as well as required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.

    Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and must aid or assist participants in a timely and safe manner while continuing the task at hand. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must have a high degree of energy, be physically fit, and have the endurance to complete the workout as well as aid participants if needed.

    Organizational skills: an ability to plan ahead, remember details, be creative, multi-task, take initiative, follow through with people, and commit to completing all tasks with excellence.

    Leadership: ability to personally model PCC values, inspire others in the vision of PCC, enable and mentor other team members to be their best, challenge processes in order to make operations better, encourage and celebrate with team members.

    Communication skills: excellent oral communication skills; strong written skills; exceptional listening skills. Communicates appropriately, professionally, and in a timely fashion with members and all staff.

    People skills: friendly, ask questions, take a genuine interest in participants, remember names and other details, and interact with people of all ages, both children and adults.

    Partnership skills: ability to work and interact with people and team members, manage conflict, build and nurture long-term relationships in a collaborative, start-up paced environment; and maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.

    Sports ministry: passionate about personal fitness and using sports to build communities that love God and love others; align with Peninsula Community Center’s mission, vision, and values.

    Humility: willingness to be led, to learn, and to grow; willingness to take on new and existing initiatives and projects.

    Qualifications

    Certifications: Must possess current Red Cross CPR certification. Certified Group Exercise Instructor (SCW, ACE, AFAA) or equivalent. Additional specialty/certifications preferred for specialized classes such as Spin, Pilates, Group Power, Boot Camp, and Yoga.

    Salary & Benefits

    Pay is per class - according to Employee’s status - M5 Sub or M5 Instructor

    Complimentary Peninsula Community Center individual membership (not including sub status)

    Approx. 2-15 hours per week depending on assigned classes.
