    UM DINING invites applications for a CULINARY SERVICE SUPERVISOR II. The person in this position is responsible for direct supervision of catering events. In the absence of the events manager and catering manager he/she will assume the role of manager. This position is responsible for student personnel functions including hiring, scheduling, training and development, shift supervision, evaluation, and performance management. They will supervise the delivery, setup, service and breakdown of small and large catering events. Frequently they will supervise multiple events. The supervisor will work collaboratively with the Catering executive sous chef in hiring and scheduling for the student culinary staff. This position reports directly to the catering events manager and assists with fiscal and personnel management of Catering. UM Catering provides catering service for over 3000 events yearly, generating $3,000,000 in gross revenue.

     

    The person assigned to this position directs and supervises up to 75 student employees including all catering service employees, and assists the executive sous chef or sous chef with back of house student employees. During events they will supervise up to five classified kitchen staff as needed.

     

    Required Skills

    The entry level Catering supervisor must have knowledge, skills, and abilities demonstrating:

    • Experience in catering service.
    • Professional supervisory experience in a foodservice environment.
    • Experience working with college students as employees and guests.
    • Experience with effectively training employees new to the workforce.
    • Experience with planning, implementing, and recapping special events.
    • Experience in addressing personnel issues and dealing effectively with conflict.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in a professional environment.
    • Excellent computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including spreadsheets.

     

    Minimum Required Experience

    • High school diploma (or equivalency) in addition to three (3) years of related work experience, one (1) of those years must be in a high volume, restaurant or catering operation; or any combination of experience and education that provides the competencies necessary to successfully discharge the duties and responsibilities assigned to the position.
    • Management ServSafe certification or the ability to obtain certification within four (4) months of employment.
    • TIPS or AACEA training and certification within 30 days of hiring for the safe service of alcohol.
    • Safe Campus Driving training and certification within 30 days.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    The ideal Catering Supervisor will have or will fine tune knowledge and skills and abilities that include:

    • Extensive knowledge of catering service in a college or university setting. .
    • Extensive knowledge of scheduling software.
    • Expert knowledge of and experience working with college students as employees.
    • Expert knowledge of event setup and decorations for special events.
    • Excellent communication skills for working directly with guests and the catering client.
    • Working knowledge of menu planning and development.
    • Working knowledge of typical foodservice equipment.
    • Working knowledge of inventory, food and labor expenses, budgets, report analysis, and revenue generation in collegiate foodservice.
    • Active participation in appropriate professional organizations such as NACUFS, ACF, etc.
    • Experience working within a union environment.
    • College or university foodservice experience is preferred.
    • Experience with sustainability initiatives such as serving local foods, composting programs, and similar sustainable business practices.

    Position Details

    WORK SCHEDULE:                 Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), 12 months/year.Becasue the work schedule is event driven, this position requires an alternative work schedule.

    SALARY:                                $14.096/HR –Current employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department.

    UNION AFFILIATION:               Montana Federation of Public Employees (MFPE)

    PROBATIONARY PERIOD:        Six months minimum
