ROLE: Environmental Scientist, Environmental Engineer, or Geoscientist
FOCUS: Environmental and Public Health Dimensions of Upstream Oil and Gas Development
POSITION PSE Healthy Energy is looking for an environmental scientist, engineer, or geologist with a strong background in hydrogeology, geochemistry or surface water hydrology. The candidate would assist in the evaluation of impacts to natural resources (e.g., groundwater, surface water) and assessment of risk to public health, with an emphasis on water pathways associated with oil and gas development. The candidate would have the capability to provide written critiques of state and federal regulations and rapidly access information from state and federal databases relevant to oil and gas production. The candidate would have the capability to synthesize and interpret primary (collected by PSE members) or secondary (extracted from databases or other sources) data to evaluate impact to groundwater or surface water resources. Evaluations could entail hydrogeologic and/or geochemical modeling of gases (especially methane), major ions, metals, organic compounds, and radionuclides (e.g., radium, uranium). Work on radionuclides could include technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM). At times, the candidate will be required to work in the field to collect primary data (e.g., gas, air or water sampling). While the emphasis of this position would be on studies involving impact to groundwater and surface water (including sediment) from oil and gas development, the ideal candidate would also have the capability to evaluate emissions from above ground sources of methane and other air pollutants related to oil and natural gas development. Hence, the ideal candidate would bring a diverse skill set to this position and have the ability to work on a variety of regulatory and technical issues.
