  • Responsibilities

    POSITION PSE Healthy Energy is looking for an environmental scientist or engineer with a strong background in petroleum engineering and hydrogeology or geochemistry or air pollution. The candidate would assist in evaluating impacts to natural resources (e.g., groundwater, surface water, air) and assessing risk to public health, with an emphasis on pathways associated with upstream oil and gas development, midstream oil and gas transmission and oil and gas storage and distribution. The candidate would have the capability to conduct emissions and geochemical modeling and assessment as well as interpret and synthesize related studies and data. 

    It is not expected that a single candidate will have expertise across all these areas- we're seeking candidates that are particularly strong in a few areas and have some interest and capabilities in others.

     ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Research: The candidate will utilize strong investigatory, analytical and writing skills to conduct data analysis, synthesize and aggregate relevant papers or research, edit documents and reports, analyze and visualize data, and both support and lead specific PSE projects and initiatives. Geohydrological and air quality systems modeling, statistical analysis, and other associated technical skills strongly desired.
    • Education and outreach: write clear scientific explanations through media and blog posts; communicate scientific concepts directly to citizens, decisionmakers, NGOs and the media; and produce summaries of findings and rapid response analyses for the public and decision makers.

    REQUIRED SKILLS In addition to an ability to meet the above responsibilities, the position will require the applicant to possess most of the following, with some capabilities in the rest and an enthusiasm for learning:

    • A master's degree with 3-5+ years work experience in environmental science, geology, geochemistry engineering, petroleum engineering or related field
    • Experience working with, cleaning, managing and interpreting large datasets and conducting statistical analysis
    • Experience working with at least one statistical/modeling software package (e.g., R, Python, STATA, etc.)
    • Strong writing skills for both scientific and lay audiences
    • A proven record of being able to work both collaboratively and independently.
    • Scientific and moral integrity
    • Able to productively provide and receive feedback
    • A desire to learn
    • A sense of humor

    DESIRED SKILLS

    • Experience working at the science-policy interface
    • Experience with or interest in public speaking (conferences, panels, etc.)
    • Familiarity with geochemical and data visualization software packages is desired.

     

    LOCATION Oakland, CA. Remote locations will also be considered.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS Salary and compensation is competitive and commensurate with education, experience and geographic location. Benefits include health insurance, 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, 15 days of vacation, paid sick leave and 11+ paid holidays.
