  • Responsibilities

    If possessing only a CCHT must have successfully completed a California Department of Public Health (CDPH) approved Hemodialysis Training Program.
    Responsible for the safe delivery of hemodialysis treatments in the chronic setting. He/she will individualize patient care based upon the age appropriate and developmental needs. Should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit. Will perform other duties as assigned.
    Will be dealing with patients 18 years and older
    OT and Holiday rate 1.5x. 1.5x for call back and any OT hours worked over 40hrs/wk, or over 8 hrs in a given day. 1.5x for any hour worked over 12 hours in a single day.
    The Renal Patient Care Technician is responsible for the safe delivery of hemodialysis treatments in the chronic setting.
    a. Implements dialysis treatment according to medical orders under supervision of R.N.
    b. Assists the interdisciplinary care team in providing for meeting the emotional needs of patients and families as they confront the psychological impact of chronic dialysis. Encourages patient s development of realistic attitudes and goals by understanding of his disease.
    c. Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of patient care plans.
    d. Identifies patient and family educational needs, assists the nurse in the distribution of educational information to patient and significant others about renal disease, prescribed treatment, and the medical regimen and their impact on patient s state of health and well-being.
    e. Assists the nurse with providing follow-up prescribed care as appropriate to support self and home care.
    f. Initiates and performs emergency medical treatments, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation for cardiac/pulmonary emergencies, and any other related emergency duties such as emergency boxes.
    g. Remains cognizant of costs and the need to provide care that maintains quality while minimizing wastage.
    h. Rinses, primes, and positions all appropriate equipment, attaches and installs all required tubing, prepares fluid delivery system and fluid bath, calibrates and checks alarms, sets monitors, and performs system check as required for optimum safety and dialysis.
    i. Assembles all necessary supplies and equipment at bedside in a timely fashion.
    j. Obtains and records required pre-dialysis information (i.e., weight, blood pressure standing and sitting, pulse, respiration and temperature). Communicates with the patient about concerns they may have and/or symptoms they are experiencing, and determines condition of the vascular access).
    k. Proceeds with the treatment plan based on pre-dialysis information under supervision of licensed staff.
    l. Obtains blood samples and other specimens as ordered.
    m. Initiates and discontinues dialysis utilizing an established vascular access including administration of intradermal anesthetic as needed.
    n. Under supervision of the nurse, monitors and appropriately intervenes in accordance with changes in the patient s condition to ensure optimum dialysis.
    o. Reports all medical changes to the Nurse in a timely manner.
    p. Charts and documents all pertinent data in the medical record in an appropriate and timely manner.
    q. Under the supervision of the nurse, administers intravenous normal saline as prescribed by set policies.
    r. Cleans and dresses access sites and wounds using appropriate aseptic techniques to minimize infection.
    s. Maintains a safe and clean environment for patients and staff by adhering to all infection control policies & procedures.
    t. May perform preventive/corrective maintenance of equipment.
    u. Participates in maintaining stock levels for supplies in the patient care area such as needle packs, saline, stubbing, etc. etc.
    v. Participates in and/or coordinates investigative research assurance optimum quality patient care.
    w. Understands alternative forms of management for patients with ESRD and assists the nurse in ensuring that each patient is aware of his options.
    x. Demonstrates responsibility for professional growth and clinical competency through independent study, clinical conferences, in-service education, and affiliation with appropriate professional organizations.
    y. Demonstrates ability to follow directions and to perform specific duties under the supervision of licensed staff.
    z. Contributes available information to individual care plans. Follows Nursing Care Plans for proper treatment and care of patients.

    2. Functions performed in Reuse/Machine Technical dialysis duties to contribute to safe delivery of hemodialysis treatments in the chronic setting as follows:
    a. Follows established procedure to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
    b. Assists in ordering and maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment.
    c. Follows established dialyzer reuse procedures. Cleans and maintains reuse equipment. Keeps accurate reuse records.
    d. Under the direction of the Chief Technician/Dialysis Technical Supervisor, performs maintenance and servicing of hemodialysis equipment.
    e. Cleans and maintains Reverse Osmosis Water System.
    f. Participates in orienting and training employees in dialysis machines and systems.
    g. Participates in mixing and maintaining dialysate and bicarbonate supplies to machines.
    h. Assists the Chief Technician/Dialysis Technical Supervisor in all technical matters pertaining to the operations of the Dialysis Clinic.
    i. Upon completion of training, applicant must have a thorough understanding of all equipment, machines and water system, and the ability to perform the technical duties required.
    j. Performs other tasks as assigned by Supervisor.

    b. Assists in orientation of new staff by sharing knowledge, experiences, and acting as preceptor when asked.
    c. Participates in Unit goal setting.
    d. Reports Unit related problems using the supervisory communication structure.
