    Job Description:

    This position is responsible for preparing, coating, and finishing shipboard surfaces aboard naval and commercial vessels in a shipyard environment. The Marine Painter applies marine-grade coatings to protect steel structures, machinery, tanks, and shipboard components from corrosion while ensuring all work meets customer specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Prepare metal surfaces for painting by cleaning, scraping, sanding, grinding, wire brushing, and solvent wiping.
    • Remove rust, scale, old coatings, grease, and contaminants using mechanical and manual methods.
    • Mix primers, paints, coatings, and solvents according to manufacturer specifications.
    • Apply marine coatings using spray equipment, brushes, rollers, and other approved application methods.
    • Apply primers, epoxy coatings, polyurethane finishes, non-skid coatings, and specialty marine coatings.
    • Perform masking and protect surrounding equipment and surfaces before painting operations.
    • Inspect prepared surfaces and completed coatings to ensure proper adhesion, thickness, and finish quality.
    • Perform touch-up painting and coating repairs as required.
    • Work aboard vessels, in dry docks, machinery spaces, tanks, and confined spaces.
    • Set up and maintain ventilation, containment, and environmental controls during painting operations.
    • Safely operate spray guns, pressure pots, airless spray equipment, grinders, sanders, and other painting equipment.
    • Follow all OSHA, NAVSEA, shipyard, and environmental regulations regarding hazardous materials and coating applications.
    • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
    • Work independently or as part of a team to complete projects safely and on schedule.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

     

    Qualifications:

    • Minimum of 2–5 years of marine, industrial, or shipyard painting experience preferred.
    • Experience applying marine-grade coatings using conventional, HVLP, or airless spray equipment preferred.
    • Knowledge of surface preparation techniques and coating application procedures.
    • Ability to read and interpret work specifications, paint schedules, and technical instructions.
    • Experience working in shipyards, marine repair facilities, or heavy industrial environments preferred.
    • Ability to work in confined spaces, aboard vessels, and at elevated heights.
    • Strong commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship.
    • Excellent attendance, reliability, and work ethic.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain access to all area shipyards and naval bases (DBIDS clearance required).

     

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull
    • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, climb, and work in physically demanding positions for extended periods.
    • Ability to work in confined spaces, tanks, elevated areas, and aboard active vessels.
    • Must be able to wear required PPE including respirators, protective suits, gloves, hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toe boots.
    • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and industrial environments with exposure to dust, fumes, and paint vapors.

     

    Work Schedule & Hours:

    • Full-time position averaging 48–56 hours per week, including weekends as required.
    • Overtime and extended hours may be required based on production schedules and project deadlines.
