Job Description
WORK REQUIREMENTS: Subjects to be taught to grades 3-6: Hawaiian Geology (class and field trip), Hawaiian Streams (class and field trip), Hawaiian Watersheds (class and field trip), Hawaiian Wetlands (class and field trip). Native Hawaiian Plants and Animals (class), Human Interaction with the Hawaiian Environment I - pre 1778 (class), and Human Interaction with the Hawaiian Environment II - 1778 to present (class). In addition to school programs, the Educator will conduct on-site ʻāina based educational experiences and service learning for PreK-6th grade students, virtually or in person.
The Oʻahu Educator will contribute to the development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of Papahana Kuaola Programs, field trips, and activities on O‘ahu for the purpose of teaching students, educators and the community to respect, understand, appreciate, and be responsible stewards of the ʻāina.
Duties and Responsibilities
Coordinates, schedules, prepares, and conducts education program services to schools and communities on O‘ahu including classroom and field trip teaching, service learning activities and community workshops.
Assists in the development and update of curriculum materials.
Assists in document layout for educational program materials.
Assists in the development of program assessment tools.
Maintains the Lelekamanu Library and collections.
Maintains program documentation and correspondence.
Contributes to the development of grant proposals and reports to funding agencies.
Communicates and collaborates with O‘ahu schools, organizations, and agencies.
Contributes and participates in conferences and workshops for educators.
Participates in staff training opportunities for continued development of pertinent knowledge and skills.
Researches and keeps abreast of education program emphases.
Submits monthly reports with supporting photo documentation of Lelekamanu activities.
Attends meetings and training sessions scheduled by the Education Manager.
Performs other work-related duties as assigned by the Education Manager.
Required Job Qualifications Education and Experience Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Hawaiian or Pacific Studies; or B.A. or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Environmental Science, Biological Science, Natural Science or related fields; OR
3 years+ experience in the education field working with preK-6th grade students, including
ʻāina-based education
cultural and natural history of Hawaiʻi
COVID-19 Vaccination Full vaccination and booster required
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities GOOD ORAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds
Hawai‘i driver’s license, current automobile insurance, and daily access to an automobile
Ability to design document layout
Ability to work independently
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) programs, InDesign, and Google Docs
Ability to schedule and conduct on-line/virtual classes through Zoom, Google Meet, WebEx and other virtual platforms
Working Environment
Position involves outdoor physical activity including hiking, walking and minimal lifting, carrying and pushing
Desired Job Qualifications
Knowledge, understanding, and experience with environmental education concerning Hawai‘i
Familiar with proper usage of the Hawaiian language and diacritical markings
Knowledge, understanding, and experience with Hawaiian culture and values
Knowledge, understanding, and experience with natural sciences and environmental education concerning Hawaiʻi
Experience teaching PreK-6th grade.
