    The New York Genome Center is looking for a highly motivated, independent and team-oriented Application Scientist with strong expertise in Molecular Biology, specifically Next Generation sequencing, and an interest in Automation and Process Engineering. This position will work closely with the production, development and clinical lab teams as well as software engineering to develop, optimize and test new protocols on liquid handling robotics and other laboratory automation equipment to help meet demands of a growing laboratory. Ideal candidates will be eager to join a fast-paced lab and have a background in automation development, testing, implementation and support for automated sample processing workflows.

     

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):

     

    • Take ownership of projects including developing, optimizing and implementing automated assays to increase scale and efficiencies in the laboratories;
    • Implement new automation programs on current equipment to meet evolving needs for new protocols and scaling sample throughput;
    • Analyze current process procedures and provide feedback for their optimization and improvement;
    • Calibrate, maintain and repair a variety of laboratory instruments, including liquid handling robotics;
    • Provide real-time support for equipment with hardware/software issues during live runs;
    • Install and implement new equipment. Conduct risk assessments of software and perform testing on hardware and software;
    • Train other Application Scientists/Automation Engineers and Lab Technicians on instrument use and automated protocols;
    • Author and update SOPs for automated processes; and,
    • Evaluate potential risk, cost and timing of new assay implementation for new project proposals and make recommendations for automated workflow solutions.

    Required Skills Required Experience

     

    • Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, engineering or related field, plus laboratory experience in nucleic acid research laboratory required;
    • 4+ years working in a molecular biology lab as a technician, automation engineer or application scientist;
    • 1+ year of experience programming liquid handling robotics required. Experience specifically with Hamilton or Perkin Elmer liquid handling automation preferred;
    • Demonstrated experience with next generation sequencing technologies highly preferred;
    • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS);
    • Experience with Tecan, Agilent, Opentron and/or Beckman Coulter preferred;
    • Experience with programming languages such as VBA and VSTA preferred;
    • A general understanding of GLP practices specifically related to instrumentation such as IQ and OQ testing and calibrations is a plus;
    • Good laboratory and organizational skills, including the ability to work independently and efficiently, are essential;
    • Ability to multitask is a must, along with an orientation toward teamwork;
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment; and,
    • Strong creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

    ABOUT THE NEW YORK GENOME CENTER

     

    The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s), and cancer.

     

    Located in Lower Manhattan, the New York Genome Center was founded by and remains closely affiliated with twelve leading academic medical centers and research universities in the New York region and beyond, engaging in research projects with and for these institutions. Essential to our collaborative work is an outstanding faculty, whose members typically hold a joint appointment at NYGC and a partner university. They support our scientific mission by conducting independent research in areas of mutual interest to us and the wider scientific community.
