    Job Title: Paralegal (Civil Litigation & Family Law) Employer: Steve Smith Trial Lawyers Location: Portland, ME (with support to the Augusta office) Job Type: Full-Time Compensation: $23.00 – $32.00 per hour (commensurate with experience)

    Position Overview:

    We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Paralegal to support either our Civil Litigation or Family Law division. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, loves variety in their work, and is looking to grow with a firm invested in professional development and excellence.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Case Management & Client Support

    Assist attorneys in all phases of civil or family law cases.

    Draft pleadings, motions, discovery documents, financial affidavits, and settlement agreements.

    Organize and maintain case files with timely and accurate court filings.

    Maintain consistent communication with clients, providing updates and gathering information.

    Schedule and coordinate meetings, hearings, depositions, and mediations.

    Legal Research & Document Preparation

    Conduct research on relevant laws, case law, and legal articles.

    Prepare trial exhibits, timelines, and summaries.

    Assist with trial and hearing preparation, including assembling evidence and witness materials.

    Administrative & Office Support

    Maintain and monitor attorney calendars and case deadlines.

    Coordinate with courts and opposing counsel for filings and scheduling.

    Track billable time accurately and assist in client billing processes.

    Draft internal and external correspondence and maintain documentation standards.

    Qualifications

    Experience:

    1–5 years of paralegal or high-level legal assistant experience (civil litigation or family law preferred).

    Familiarity with Maine court rules and procedures highly valued.

    Education:

    Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, or a related field preferred.

    Skills & Competencies

    Strong legal drafting, writing, and research skills.

    Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and legal practice management software (Clio experience is a plus).

    Outstanding attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple cases at once.

    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    Professional, positive attitude with a proactive, team-oriented mindset.
