    Staff Writer, The Discoverer

The Discoverer is looking for a multi-talented, staff writer with a passion for travel, adventure, and words to assist in the editorial efforts of one of our flagship brands, The Discoverer.

    About The Discoverer

The Discoverer is a digital travel magazine delivered to the inbox, currently serving millions of readers. In a holding pattern during the pandemic, The Discoverer is now primed for a relaunch and ready to be taken to new heights.

    About The Role

As the Staff Writer, you'll be one of the defining voices of The Discoverer – whether that's through email, social, blog posts, or any of the countless other things you could potentially be writing on a weekly basis. This includes crafting copy for daily newsletters and social media content, sweepstakes, news stories about the travel industry, original travel guides/essays/interviews, and heck, throw a short story in there if you want.

You'll also work closely with both the Managing Editor and Senior Marketing Manager on a range of editorial and marketing projects. Above all, you will be hugely influential in both how we address and engage with our community of readers AND how we approach the world of travel at this very moment. Whatever's happening, the Staff Writer will be the one translating that for our audience via social, newsletters, and news stories on the site.

The Staff Writer is one of the first full-time hires at The Discoverer and will work directly with our small team to set the brand into motion. This is a rare opportunity to play a keystone role in a startup that has a direct path to reach millions of subscribers on a daily basis.

This role will be remote with the potential to work from one of our team hubs in Southern California, Denver, or New York. We are only looking for U.S.-based applicants at this time.

    ACCOUNTABILITIES

    You will be accountable for…

    • Brand oversight. Executing projects while adhering to our specific editorial voice, style guidelines, and quality standards.
    • Content production & copywriting. Writing content as needed for multiple platforms, including web, email, sweepstakes, and social media.
    • Concepting & ideation. The Discoverer is made up of a small, enthusiastic group that's always looking for new and interesting ideas. As one of the major voices behind the Discoverer brand, we expect you to be vocal.
    • Staying organized. On any given day, the Staff Writer could be drafting newsletters, rewriting Instagram copy, brainstorming sweepstakes ideas, researching a developing travel-adjacent news story for an original piece, and writing a guide to Asheville's best breweries after a recent vacation (we promise, you had a great time). No day will be the same, but they'll all be busy.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    You're a great fit if you have…

    • 2+ years experience as a writer, copywriter, or journalist within a digital publishing company or agency.
    • An understanding of email publishing, social media, and editorial workflow.
    • Superior writing skills, and the ability to translate those across multiple mediums.
    • A passion for travel. While there is no travel specifically required for this role, our team is made up of seasoned travelers and we encourage everyone to go on trips as often as they're comfortable with. If you'd like to write about that experience for the site as well, even better.
    • A sense of humor.
    • The ability to understand what resonates with readers.
    • The ability to occasionally work varied hours, including time on the weekends to execute email campaigns.
    • The ability to remain organized when there are many moving parts.
    • A proactive and collaborative low-ego work style; you love working with people and people love working with you.

    PERKS & BENEFITS

    • Pardon Perks. As a member of the Pardon family, you will have access to our spaces (currently in Newport Beach and Denver), a discretionary budget for personal effectiveness, access to the Pardon network of entrepreneurs and creatives, and other benefits of working with the talented leaders across our portfolio of ventures.
    • Health Insurance. Pardon will cover 75% (and 50% for dependents) on a set of Anthem health insurance plans (including an HSA option), as well as dental and vision plans via Guardian (same coverage).
    • 401K. Pardon will match 100% of 3% 401K allocations, and 50% of 3-5% allocations, via Guideline.
    • Time Off. Pardon offers a flexible personal time off (PTO) policy for our team members. There is no defined “number of personal days” team members are allowed to take off. The goal is to give our team the freedom to live a balanced life whether they are in the office, working remotely, discovering the world, or have personal priorities. We understand our team members are autonomous and take ownership of their work-related responsibilities. At Pardon, we distinguish OOO (out of office, which means no work scheduled but reachable for brief urgent matters) from OTG (off the grid, which means people are unreachable and not able to be reached), and trust our team to use the combination effectively.

The compensation range for this role is: $50,000 - $65,000 annually

We are committed to providing equal opportunity for all. We are firm believers in the strength of diversity and aim to build teams of individuals that offer unique perspectives, come from different backgrounds, and challenge each other to be better each and every day.
