Amara seeks a part-time attorney to provide trauma-informed legal representation to survivors of sex trafficking and sex workers. Required Skills/Qualifications:
J.D. from an accredited law school
At least one to three years of litigation experience or equivalent relevant work experience
Strong interest or knowledge regarding human trafficking, social justice, and public interest
Excellent research and writing skills
Proficiency in Google Suite
Experience using case management software
Ability to pay close attention to detail, successfully manage time, and prioritize workload
Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle to attend meetings and court hearings throughout DC and Maryland
Member in good standing of the DC Bar
Eligible for admission to the Maryland Bar or to practice in Maryland under Rule 19-218
Desired Skills/Qualifications:
Interest in working with youth, survivors of trauma, and low income individuals
Experience conducting trainings and community outreach activities
Licensed to practice in federal court or neighboring jurisdiction Virginia
Role/Responsibilities:
Independently provide legal representation on cases including, but not limited to child custody and other family law issues, civil protection orders, criminal record relief, name changes, misdemeanor criminal defense, and crime victims advocacy in DC and Maryland
Conduct trauma-informed client intakes, provide holistic referrals and warm hand-offs for clients’ social service needs, and collaborate with partner organizations providing social services for Amara’s clients
Maintain updated case files, case notes, and time entries in Amara’s case management system
Conduct outreach, including Human Trafficking 101 trainings and Know Your Rights workshops, virtually and in-person in Maryland and DC as needed
Comply with grant metrics, restrictions, and goals
Establish and foster relationships with partners, clients, and volunteers
Other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director
