    Job Description

    Headway Workforce Solutions is seeking dedicated part-time Pre-Algebra Tutors and Test Administrators to support eighth-grade students in the Chicago Public School district through small-group tutoring sessions and skill assessments. This tutoring program is part of an education research project funded by the National Science Foundation to improve the foundational algebra skills of children who struggle with mathematics.

    This position involves delivering research-based pre-algebra tutoring lessons three times per week and later conducting assessments to evaluate students’ skills. Sessions will take place during daytime school hours from January to March 2025.

    Key Details:

    • Start Date: Training begins the week of January 6, 2025 (virtual or in-person). Tutoring begins January 13, 2025.

    • Commitment: 10–15 hours per week. Hours will be consistent during tutoring but may vary during the assessment period. Qualified candidates must be available to commit for the entire length of the testing and tutoring windows (January through March).

    • Location: Schools within the Chicago Public School district (applicants will be traveling to Humboldt Park area).

    Responsibilities:

    • Deliver engaging small-group pre-algebra tutoring sessions.

    • Conduct skill assessments for 8th-grade students.

    • Maintain clear communication with team leaders and colleagues.

    • Ensure compliance with school district procedures, especially regarding the privacy of students and families.

    • Submit completed assessments and timesheets promptly.

    • Attend mandatory paid training sessions (week of January 6, 2025).

    • Follow district health and safety requirements, including background checks, fingerprinting, and COVID-19 protocols.

    Requirements:

    • Availability from January through March 2025, during school hours (7:30 AM–3:30 PM).

    • Reliable personal transportation and willingness to travel reasonable distances to reach assigned school(s)

    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with students and team members.

    • Ability to work independently and within a team setting.

    · Expectation to pass all required background checks.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, child development, or a related field.

    • Experience working with children aged 10–14 from diverse backgrounds.

    • Familiarity with tutoring or teaching upper elementary or middle school students.

    Compensation & Benefits:

    • Pay starting at $40/hour (based on qualifications).

    • Mileage reimbursement at $0.67/mile for inter-school travel.

    • Paid training (attendance mandatory).
