    JOB SUMMARY The EH&S Intern is a support function to assist the EH&S Manager ensure essential environmental, health, and safety functions are carried out for the organization to maintain regulatory compliance with oversight agencies such as Cal-OSHA, OCHCA, OCFA, City of Irvine, DTSC, RWQCB-Santa Ana, SCAQMD, and ATF. Under the guidance and direction of the EH&S Manager, the EH&S Intern will also assist in implementing corporate EH&S initiatives including the Business Continuity Plan (BCP), the ISO 14001:2015 standard implementation program, and the Behavior Based Safety (BBS) program.

    The EH&S Intern will help maintain records associated with hazardous waste collection and disposal/treatment, air quality regulations pertaining to permitting or rule compliance, and administer the personal protective equipment (PPE) program at MDSI.

    Additionally, the position would assist in developing and executing company-wide safety and environmental policies and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance as well as meet corporate EH&S goals and advance corporate EH&S priorities. The EH&S Intern may be called upon to help carry out or coordinate corrective actions in the case of any internal audit findings or regulatory discrepancies.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    " Coordinate and distribute PPE when necessary including safety shoes and safety eyewear. " Coordinate, schedule, and facilitate training for required EH&S training classes such as I2P2/BBS, Hazards Waste Handing, Right-to-Know/HazCom, New Hire EH&S Orientation, Emergency Response, Fire Protection, Hearing Conservation, PPE, CPR/First-Aid, Lock-out/Tag-out, safe lifting, ergonomics, and safe forklift use. " Help coordinate with our vendor for the resupply of first-aid cabinets, eye-wash stations, and emergency evacuation and trauma kits. " Attend meetings related to key job functions including BBS, BCP, and ISO 14001. " Serve as an alternate point-of-contact when the EH&S Manager is not available. " Update the EH&S Manager regularly on the status of audit and compliance finding closures and BBS risk/hazard identification closures from Daily Layered Accountability (DLA) meeting observations and input. " Be responsible to maintain electronic records/documents to verify EH&S program compliance and status. " Maintain hardcopy and MDSDOnline electronic libraries of current facility Safety Data Sheets (SDS). " Oversee Global Harmonized System (GHS) for communicating chemical hazards on labeling and with SDS. " Oversee hazardous materials and hazardous waste program elements including coordination of hazardous waste hauler pickups, HW manifest tracking, labeling, satellite collection points, and HazMat Locker compliance. " Conduct routine inspections to meet regulatory compliance and reduce risk of injury or environmental release such as inspections of fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, storm water compliance, fire system components, spill response kits, etc. " Assist with facility ergonomic assessments, mitigations, and accommodations tracking as needed. " Help with maintaining ATF compliance with securing, storing, dispensing, and tracking inventory of explosive impulse cartridges. " Conduct and collect samples for industrial hygiene (IH) or environmental compliance purposes on occasion. " Assist EH&S Manager in preparing status reports on BBS/I2P2 injury and illness prevention activities, closure of internal audit findings, and updates on special projects or programs. " Help the EH&S Manager assess workplace safety compliance and ensuring safe work practices are being followed. Make recommendations to implement improvements where needed.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: An EH&S Intern candidate should have an Associate's degree (A.A.) from two-year College or technical school or equivalent experience. A minimum of one to two years' experience with Environmental, Health & Safety programs and compliance work in a job or military setting is preferred.

    An EH&S Intern candidate should possess good general chemical knowledge coupled with a mechanical aptitude and familiarity with government regulation regarding the environment, health, and safety issues.  The candidate should be generally knowledgeable and experienced with Cal-OSHA and Cal-EPA standards at a minimum.  Hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment is helpful. Background in ergonomic assessment and mitigations is also helpful.
