    The Packaging Manager will play a key role in the Product Development department to support new product launches and product improvements from early inception through approval, and all the way to launch.

     

    HOW YOU WILL HAVE AN IMPACT AT PAULA’S CHOICE:   The Packaging Manager will play a key role in the Product Development department to support new product launches and product line maintenance from design brief to production execution and consumer complaints management.

     

    The Packaging Manager will lead the company’s packaging efforts and ensure all the technical aspects, from functionality, cost efficiency, aesthetics, and sustainability.

     

    The Product Development team is part of the Research & Development department and is an extremely supportive and collaborative group of long-term Paula’s Choice team members with vast and varied professional experience for you to build on.

     

    AS A PACKAGING MANAGER ON THE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT TEAM, YOU WILL COVER MANY FUNCTIONS:

    PROJECT CONCEPTION AND DEVELOPMENT

    • Work closely with the Director of PD, Brand and Creative to establish the design, packaging type, technical feasibility and cost parameters for each new initiative.
    • Collaborate with Creative & Brand on proofs and mock-ups to ensure design goals are being met. Facilitate revisions and approvals with vendors
    • Work with Wholesale and Quality teams to ensure secondary packaging (unit cartons, kit boxes etc.) are aligned with on-shelf needs and retail goals

     

    SOURCING

    • Source primary and secondary packaging with an emphasis on sustainability, quality, and cost efficiency. Manage the approval process with cross-functional teams
    • Source accessories for various promotions (Anniversary, Holiday, GWPs), both for domestic and global business
    • Negotiate component pricing and manage costs
    • Stay abreast of packaging trends, best practices, and innovation. Encourage suppliers to routinely present new and innovative packaging solutions

     

    TESTING & TROUBLESHOOTING:

    • Oversee package compatibility testing, usage and dispensability testing, and fill weight confirmations
    • Manage ship and leak testing in partnership with the Quality team
    • Facilitate line trials and attend first production as needed
    • Collaborate with suppliers to uncover or troubleshoot errors in the process, and to ensure that design goals are met

     

    PROJECT MANAGEMENT

    • Project manage all packaging deliverables, help develop packaging timelines and collaborate cross functionally to ensure key milestones are met
    • Manage product labeling process (labels and over-labels), dielines, proofs, material, registration, application, etc.
    • Review and approve custom tooling of primary components
    • Review and analyze draw downs, mockups, proofs from suppliers
    • Develop technical and physical specification sheets for all components
    • Responsible for ensuring the suppliers provide on-time delivery of packaging promos, samples, and comps

     

    PACKAGE CHANGES & COST SAVINGS

    • Manage component, design and material changes
    • Manage component cost saving initiatives (e.g. value engineering)
    • Track packaging artwork changes and communicate with internal partners regarding packaging artwork changes

     

     

    ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

    Position Status: Full-time

    Location: Downtown Seattle (Temporarily remote)

    Hours: Basic business hours with some flexibility

    Physical requirements: Ability to sit for long periods of time, this role will also be approximately 85% screen time

    Travel: Occasional travel to visit domestic and international vendors may be required once it is safe to travel (up to 10%)

    Qualifications

    WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE TABLE:

    • 3+ years personal care or cosmetic packaging experience 
    • Experienced in sourcing and developing packaging that is distributed in retail locations
    • Strong understanding of packaging decoration terminology, finishes, capabilities, and limitations
    • Knowledge of common personal care packaging materials (PET, PP, HDPE, etc.)
    • Proven experience coordinating multiple projects at one time 
    • Strong in the Microsoft Office Suite of products 
    • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills 
    • Ability to work in fast-paced, often-changing collaborative environment 
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects ensuring they are on time and on budget

     

    WHAT CAN HELP YOU REALLY STAND OUT:

    • 5+ years personal care or cosmetic packaging experience 
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience 
    • Beauty experience a strongly preferred
    • Working knowledge of packaging equipment and tooling
