Position Summary
The Pediatric Mobile Lab Swabber (Specimen Collection Technician) is responsible for performing diagnostic specimen collection for pediatric patients during mobile healthcare visits. This role supports mobile pediatric providers by obtaining nasal, throat, and other approved specimens used for rapid diagnostic testing.
The position focuses specifically on specimen collection, patient preparation, and maintaining proper laboratory protocols while working in a mobile care environment that serves patients in their homes.
The ideal candidate demonstrates strong patient interaction skills, particularly with children, and can perform swabbing procedures efficiently while maintaining a calm, reassuring presence for pediatric patients and their caregivers.
Key Responsibilities
Specimen Collection
Perform pediatric specimen collection including:
Nasal swabs
Nasopharyngeal swabs
Throat swabs
Additional approved specimen types as required
Ensure proper labeling and handling of all specimens.
Follow clinical protocols for pediatric specimen collection.
Ensure accuracy of patient identification prior to collection.
Patient Interaction
Prepare children and caregivers for swab procedures.
Use age-appropriate communication techniques to reduce anxiety.
Provide reassurance and maintain a calm environment during procedures.
Maintain professionalism and compassion in home care settings.
Testing & Documentation
Assist with point-of-care testing when applicable (such as rapid strep, flu, RSV, or COVID tests).
Accurately document specimen collection in patient records.
Communicate results and findings to the supervising provider.
Infection Control & Safety
Follow infection control standards and PPE protocols.
Maintain proper biohazard disposal procedures.
Ensure sterile handling of all testing materials.
Maintain HIPAA compliance in home environments.
Mobile Unit Support
Maintain cleanliness and organization of mobile testing supplies.
Inventory and restock specimen collection materials.
Ensure testing kits and materials are ready for patient visits.
Assist with setup and breakdown of mobile testing equipment.
