  • Responsibilities

    We are seeking a compassionate Peer Counselor to support participants enrolled in nutrition and public health programs, including WIC. This position provides breastfeeding education, nutrition counseling, and peer support to pregnant, postpartum, and parenting individuals. The Peer Counselor plays a key role in promoting healthy behaviors, improving maternal and infant health outcomes, and increasing program engagement.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide peer-to-peer nutrition education and breastfeeding support to WIC and public health program participants

    • Encourage breastfeeding initiation, duration, and continuation through education and emotional support

    • Deliver individual and group health education sessions aligned with WIC and public health guidelines

    • Conduct outreach to engage eligible participants and promote program services

    • Assist participants with referrals to healthcare providers and community resources

    • Document services accurately in accordance with grant, program, and reporting requirements

    • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including nurses, dietitians, and program staff

    • Support data collection and quality improvement activities related to program outcomes

    Qualifications:

    Must-haves:

    • Breastfed at least one child in the past 5 years
    • exhibits good nurturing skills
    • Must have access to reliable transportation to keep program commitments.
    • Must project enthusiasm for assisting other women. Will need to complete the Peer Counselor Training Program through the WYH WIC agency before counseling begins.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

    • Bilingual or multilingual abilities strongly preferred

    • Knowledge of breastfeeding, nutrition, maternal and child health, or public health principles

    • Experience in WIC, community health, peer counseling, or human services preferred

    • Ability to work with diverse and underserved populations in a culturally responsive manner

    • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary public health team

    • Commitment to confidentiality, ethical standards, and participant-centered care
