    Job Summary:

    The Peer Recovery Supporter provides non-clinical support to individuals in recovery from substance use or mental health disorders. Utilizing their own lived experience, they serve as a role model, mentor, and advocate, helping individuals build self-sufficiency, access resources, and work toward sustained recovery.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Peer Support and Mentoring:
    * Provide emotional and social support to individuals in recovery through one-on-one or group sessions.
    * Use lived experience (if necessary) to foster hope and motivation, demonstrating the possibility of successful recovery.
    * Offer practical advice and coping strategies for managing triggers and maintaining sobriety.
    * Be a role model for positive behavior and resilience, demonstrating commitment to recovery.
    
    1. Resource Navigation and Advocacy:
    * Assist individuals in identifying and accessing local recovery resources, including treatment programs, housing, employment, and social services.
    * Help individuals understand and access community support systems like 12-step programs, recovery meetings, and mental health services.
    * Advocate for individuals in navigating healthcare and social service systems, ensuring their needs are met.
    
    1. Recovery Planning Support:
    * Support individuals in setting recovery goals and developing personalized recovery plans.
    * Encourage self-directed recovery by empowering individuals to take charge of their own recovery process.
    * Help individuals assess their progress and adjust goals as needed.
    
    1. Education and Outreach:
    * Provide educational materials and resources related to substance use disorders, mental health, recovery, and coping strategies.
    * Engage in community outreach to raise awareness about recovery and reduce stigma associated with addiction and mental health issues.
    
    1. Collaboration with Clinical and Support Staff:
    * Work alongside counselors, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to provide holistic support to individuals in recovery.
    * Attend regular team meetings, provide feedback on the progress of individuals in recovery, and suggest areas for improvement.
    
    1. Documentation and Reporting:
    * Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of interactions with individuals, including case notes, progress reports, and recovery plans.
    * Ensure confidentiality and compliance with privacy regulations (such as HIPAA).
    

    Skills and Qualifications:

    • Lived Experience : Personal experience in recovery from substance use or mental health challenges, with a sustained period of sobriety or mental wellness (typically 1-2 years or more).
    • Peer Recovery Certification : Certification as a Peer Recovery Supporter (e.g., through the Ohio Certification Board or other relevant certifications) may be required or preferred.
    • Strong Communication Skills : Ability to listen actively, offer empathy, and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
    • Knowledge of Recovery Resources : Familiarity with community resources, addiction treatment, and mental health services.
    • Cultural Competence : Ability to work with individuals from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
    • Empathy and Compassion : A genuine desire to help others and a deep understanding of the challenges involved in recovery.

    Working Conditions:

    • The role may require flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, depending on the needs of the individuals being supported.
    • Peer Recovery Supporters may work in a variety of settings, including outpatient clinics, inpatient facilities, community organizations, or through outreach programs.
    • Some travel may be required to attend meetings, appointments and job related visits.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to sit for long periods, use a computer, and interact with clients in person or over the phone.
    • The job may involve emotional challenges, and the ability to maintain professional boundaries and self-care is essential.
