U.S.-Based or Offshore with U.S. HR Experience The Law Office of Pietro Canestrelli is a fast-growing, multi-state tax law firm. We’re looking for an experienced People Operations Lead to build and refine the people who support our expanding team across the U.S. and internationally. This is a strategic, hands-on role for someone who has experience managing offshore, multistate, and or international team members, has a working knowledge and understanding of relevant California HR compliance who thinks proactively, and knows how to design systems that support growth. Responsibilities: HR Leadership & Strategy • Design and oversee firmwide HR strategy, including workforce planning, recruiting, onboarding, training, and professional development. • Guide leadership on organizational structure, compensation, and retention initiatives. • Support firm goals by serving as a strategic business partner who uses data to inform decisions. Benefits Administration • Lead benefits management, including health insurance, 401(k), payroll deductions, open enrollment, and vendor coordination. • Serve as the primary point of contact with all benefits carriers, brokers, and PEO/EOR partners. • Evaluate PEO options annually to ensure best value and coverage. Compliance & Multi-State Oversight • Implement and maintain compliant HR policies with a strong focus on California labor laws. • Oversee interstate employees and ensure compliance across all jurisdictions. • Manage HRIS records, documentation, and data protection requirements. People Operations & Culture • Develop and promote firm culture through engagement programs, training, and values-based initiatives. • Support leadership in handling employee relations, performance evaluations, and progressive discipline. • Partner with U.S. and international team members to ensure consistency in communication, expectations, and support. Sourcing, Hiring & Onboarding • Post roles, screen applicants, and run structured initial interviews. • Maintain a simple applicant tracking log and coordinate leadership interviews. • Build onboarding checklists and welcome materials. • Ensure new hires have everything they need on day one: logins, access, and clear expectations. SOPs, Training, & Development • Draft, organize, and maintain SOPs across departments (legal, paralegal, admin, operations). • Build training outlines, reference guides, and scripts for common workflows. • Create and maintain training modules, slides, or short instructional videos. • Keep materials updated based on feedback and changing processes. Day-to-Day Work • Document 1–2 workflows/SOPs per day. • Screen and coordinate candidate interviews. • Draft or update training modules weekly. • Maintain onboarding checklists and staff files. • Support leadership with people-related tasks and special projects. KPIs You’ll Influence • Percentage of roles filled on time. • Zero compliance issues across all jurisdictions. • Improved employee engagement and performance (“People GPA”). • Reduction in vacancy time and retention improvement. Qualifications: • Professional certification from the SHRM or similar organization • Must possess a bachelor’s degree in business management, HR management or similar major • Excellent leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills • 3-5 years of experience as an HR manager, upper-level HR generalist or in a senior position in HR management • 3-5 years progressive HR experience, including multi-state HR and benefits administration. • Relevant knowledge of California employment laws , wage & hour rules, and leave management. • Experience supporting professional services, legal, or other regulated industries. • Strong understanding of 401(k), health insurance, payroll , and vendor management. • Proven experience designing onboarding, training, and development programs. • Comfortable working autonomously in a remote environment. Compensation: $80,000 - $140,000
