    Credit hours in early childhood education/development and related fields AND/OR experience in licensed childcare centers and public schools.

    General Description: There are two main roles of the Lead Supervisor and Special Education Teacher. The first is to support and supervise the teaching staff with scheduling, hands-on help, problem solving, and day to day operations. The second is to create a learning environment for children with extra needs that may not be able to thrive in the standard learning environment. This teacher will work alongside children who are experiencing behavioral or learning challenges and help them socially, emotionally, and academically so they can continue on their path to kindergarten readiness. This role will also perform administrative tasks, manage assessments and student files, and partner with parents to give the family a full and comprehensive approach to their child’s success.

    Essential Functions of the job:

    Teaching and supervision:

    Understands the social-emotional developmental needs of children and children with extra needs.

    Understands the impact of toxic stress and trauma on children and their families, and can implement and build on the trauma-informed framework developed in the classrooms.

    Supports classroom teachers in creating quality learning classrooms

    Assists Center Directors with scheduling staff and fills in for classroom teachers when needed

    Lead’s teacher meetings and regularly checks in with teachers to hear about needs and quality

    Understanding of and willingness to implement sensory integration in the classroom.

    Assists in planning and facilitating curriculum for young children in a developmentally appropriate setting based heavily in social-emotional development.

    Encourages and teaches pre-literacy, communication, social skills, cognitive and other developmental skills.

    Welcomes, talks with and meets with parents.

    Observes, evaluates, and assess children’s progress in collaboration with classroom teachers.

    Observes and reports on physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of children and works with Minneapolis Public Schools for referrals and screening.

    Assists in other Early Childhood Development Program classrooms as necessary for ratio, including classrooms at the shelter location.

    Administration:

    Knowledge and understanding of DHS Rule 3.

    Collaborates with People Serving People Programs and Staff as needed.

    Maintains appropriate program records.

    Completes first aid and Red Cross certified CPR training every 2 years.

    Completes yearly in-service training equal to 1-2% of the number of hours worked.

    Completes required trainings and documentation for Parent Aware rating.

    Performs other duties assigned by the Preschool and Learning Center Director and/or Assistant Directors.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: This role works with the center directors and acts as a leader in supporting staff, interns, and volunteers.

    Computer Skills: Basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft applications. Familiarity with iPad apps and systems. Ability to navigate virtual meetings, events, trainings, and tasks.

    Other Qualifications:

    Two or more years of experience serving multi-cultural, socially diverse population desired.

    Prior knowledge and experience with best practices, instructional strategies, classroom management, and behavior management

    Knowledge, abilities, and skills o support and implement positive behavioral interventions in a early childhood setting

    Valid driver’s license

    Combination of education and experience in early childhood required

    First aid and CPR certified or willing to be certified within 90 days.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must lift and/or move 50 lbs.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can be loud at times.
