    Under the supervision of laboratory supervisors, physicians, and nursing staff, you will be responsible for collecting blood specimens and other biological samples from patients in a safe, efficient, and professional manner. Your primary focus will be on venipuncture procedures while maintaining the highest standards of patient care, specimen integrity, and laboratory safety protocols.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Blood Collection & Specimen Handling:

    Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection using proper techniques and following established protocols

    Collect blood specimens via fingerstick, heelstick, and other approved methods as appropriate

    Ensure proper specimen labeling, handling, and transport according to laboratory standards

    Maintain specimen integrity and chain of custody throughout the collection process

    Process and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis, including centrifugation and aliquoting when required

    Patient Care & Safety:

    Verify patient identity using two patient identifiers before any procedure

    Explain procedures to patients and provide reassurance to reduce anxiety

    Assess patients for potential complications or contraindications to blood collection

    Monitor patients during and after procedures for adverse reactions

    Provide appropriate post-procedure care and instructions to patients

    Maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines at all times

    Equipment & Laboratory Management:

    Maintain and calibrate phlebotomy equipment, ensuring proper functioning and safety

    Prepare collection supplies and ensure adequate inventory levels

    Follow strict infection control and universal precautions protocols

    Properly dispose of biohazardous materials and sharps according to safety regulations

    Maintain clean and organized work areas and collection stations

    Documentation & Administrative Tasks:

    Accurately complete requisition forms and maintain detailed collection logs

    Document any collection difficulties, patient reactions, or specimen quality issues

    Communicate relevant patient information to appropriate healthcare team members

    Assist with quality control procedures and laboratory compliance activities

    Participate in continuing education and training programs as required

    Communication & Coordination:

    Coordinate with nursing staff, physicians, and laboratory personnel regarding specimen collection schedules

    Respond to stat and priority collection requests in a timely manner

    Communicate collection results and any issues to supervising staff

    Provide excellent customer service to patients, families, and healthcare team members

    Qualifications & Requirements:

    High school diploma or equivalent required

    Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program

    National certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) from an accredited organization (such as ASCP, NCA, or NCCT) required

    Must be skilled in drawing blood with demonstrated professional experience

    1+ years of professional phlebotomy experience required

    Previous healthcare or customer service experience preferred

    Skills & Competencies:

    Excellent venipuncture skills with ability to collect from difficult draws

    Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling

    Effective communication and interpersonal skills

    Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently

    Proficiency with laboratory information systems and basic computer skills

    Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory procedures

    Physical Demands & Work Environment:

    Physical Activity: Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting.

    Lifting: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance.

    Manual Dexterity: Requires fine motor skills for tasks such as administering medications, taking vital signs, and performing wound care.

    Sensory Requirements: Ability to see, hear, and touch to perform job duties effectively.

    Exposure to Hazards: Potential exposure to infectious diseases, biohazardous materials, and chemical agents.
