GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
The Kiln Operator is responsible for the proper preparation, loading, firing, unloading and tumbling of ceramic parts and the safe operation of departmental equipment within the Dry Press group.

REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma preferred.
Must pass a drug test.
Must pass a criminal background check.
Ability to read and write and understand directions in English.
Ability to comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to regularly lift and/or move up 25 pounds and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare and load ceramic parts from dry pressing onto tunnel kiln cars.
Unload same ceramic parts from tunnel kiln cars inspecting them to remove any cracked, warped or otherwise defective parts.
Tumble ceramic parts in specified tumblers and place in dryer oven to dry; place parts in UNINSPECTED location; once inspected, move to INSPECTED location.
Monitor and document the operation of the kilns including periodic kiln watches every 2 hours; maintain tunnel kiln cars, blowers, filters, tracks, etc. as required.
Properly record information on lot cards and kiln car tags as cars move through the firing process.
Keep work area clean, safe and organized.
Maintain safety and Quality Assurance standards by knowing and applying proper procedures for operating the machines within the department.
Assist with company 5S program.

This position does not supervise other staff.

Operates under the direction of the Process Engineer - Kiln

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
Position is either first, second or third shift and can include assigned weekends and holidays or overtime as required by Supervision.
Work is completed in the kiln area which can be extremely HOT especially in the summer months; lightweight clothing is recommended; regular consumption of replenishing fluids are provided and encouraged.
Required PPE includes steel toe shoes and gloves when handling hot materials.
