    About the Position

    Join Mt. Cuba Center's Greenhouse team in a role that combines plant production and retail operations. As the Plant Sales and Production Assistant, you'll support our plant sale program through merchandising, inventory management, volunteer collaboration, and guest engagement. This role helps cultivate a diverse collection of native plants in our greenhouse production facilities by administering proper irrigation, plant care, and environmental monitoring. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in both greenhouse operations and public horticulture.

    Essential Functions

    Plant Sales Operations (60%)

    • Facilitate inventory tracking and stock area organization
    • Maintain high display standards in the sales area through proper merchandising, plant grooming, and quality control
    • Collaborate with Guest Experience staff to ensure proper plant presentation and routine stock replenishment
    • Work with Marketing team to develop promotional materials and plant highlights
    • Support a small volunteer team providing plant selection guidance and information for guests
    • Create informative plant signage and educational materials

    Greenhouse Operations (40%)

    • Provide essential plant care including proper irrigation and environmental monitoring
    • Support production activities through tasks such as potting, spacing, moving, pruning, and staking plants
    • Assist with general greenhouse maintenance and organization

    Qualifications and Skills

    • Minimum 1 year of experience in greenhouse, gardening, or horticultural operations
    • Valid driver's license in good standing
    • Knowledge of plants and environmental factors affecting plant growth
    • Strong interest in native plants, naturalistic gardening, and greenhouse operations
    • Enthusiasm for plant sales and customer service
    • Basic computer skills with willingness to learn new technology
    • Self-motivated with strong attention to detail
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

    Physical Requirements

    • Extended periods of walking and standing
    • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds
    • Comfortable working in greenhouse conditions and various weather environments

    Schedule and Compensation

    • Part-time position limited to 1,400 hours per year (average of 24 hours per week)
    • Reduced schedule during off-season (December - February, average of 12 hours per week)
    • Regular weekend work required
    • Evening, holiday, and special event coverage as needed
    • Typical schedule is flexible within business hours
    • Hourly rate: $17.00 - $19.00 per hour depending on experience
