Plant Therapy is in search of a full-time Formulation Chemist with 2-5 years of experience in natural and organic skincare and household product development and manufacturing. Our ideal candidate will have a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology or a related science field, or equivalent. Senior Formulating Chemist
Reports to: VP of Operations & Product Development
Job Summary:
The Senior Formulating Chemist is of great significance to Plant Therapy. A person in this position will be working in a highly dynamic and creative environment and will be involved in all stages of formula development from concept to an approved scaled-up batch, as well as reverse engineering of existing products. Additionally, the Senior Formulating Chemist will be responsible for creating daily lab batches to optimize workflow and completing projects in a timely manner. A person in this role must have a solid working knowledge of raw materials and the formulation of a variety of personal care and household products.
Essential Functions:
Perform varied multi-task formulation, testing, reverse formulation, and development of products
Work closely with the Product Development Manager to develop a variety of innovative products from concept to an approved scaled-up formula
Make daily lab batches as assigned by management
Prepare paperwork for formula submissions and document specifications for various batches
Monitor stability testing on R&D batches- Stability testing will be carried out by Lab Tech
Evaluate and communicate formulation results, ensure the quality of data generated, and adhere to company procedures and practices
Maintain detailed, organized records in formulation and project management databases
Submit requests, test, and release new raw material samples
Collaborate with the mixing department and the operations team to ensure inventory of raw materials are replenished and maintained appropriately
Analyzes organic and inorganic raw materials to determine chemical and physical properties to establish viability of use.
Conducts basic research in product category to familiarize oneself with the latest technology and delivery systems.
Formulate from concept to production. Performs pilot batch making, testing, oversight of scale up, stability testing and microbial challenge testing.
Conducts research into composition, structure, properties, relationships, and reactions of raw materials and formulas to develop and improve products.
Experience with quality assurance, product specifications, procedure writing, scale up of new products, and signing off on batches.
Additional Skills and Knowledge:
Knowledge of regulatory guidelines including FDA & GMP.
Tolerance of working with perfumes, fragrances, and essential oils.
Detail oriented, excellent communication skills, and ability to manage and prioritize projects.
Performs other duties as assigned or needed.
Machines Operated: Laboratory equipment including, but not limited to pH meter, Refractometer, Viscometer, Rotary mixer, Scales
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, a related science field, or equivalent
2-5 years of experience in manufacturing natural and organic skincare and household products with a contract manufacturer or brand
Knowledge of cosmetic good manufacturing practices
Proficiency in MS Office or Google Suite
