    Department: Mechanical Engineering

    Position Summary
The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the integration of mechanical and electrical components used in fuel cell systems.  The Mechanical Design Engineer will create structured 3D-CAD assemblies and use FEA and CFD tools to ensure designs are robust to withstand external forces including shock, vibration and extreme temperature variations.  This role requires close interaction with the other engineering team members to ensure efforts are coordinated.  The role also requires close interaction with the supply chain, quality, manufacturing and service teams to ensure designs meet cross-functional requirements.  The ideal candidate should be self-motivated, able to handle multiple project assignments and willing to learn and adapt within a fast-paced engineering organization.

    Core Duties and Responsibilities

    • Build and maintain knowledge regarding Plug Power technology including current design specifications and constraints.
    • Work to create new system designs and/or modify existing system designs with a focus upon lower cost, improved manufacturability, increased product performance, and higher overall product quality.
    • Work with systems, mechanical, chemical and electrical engineering teams to define integration requirements for a wide variety of fuel cell system components.
    • Perform engineering analysis to define critical design parameters and predict design latitude.
    • Develop statistically based test plans to optimize designs and verify design latitude.
    • Use PTC Creo to create accurate, complete and concise engineering documentation from large system assembly models and detailed part drawings.
    • Coordinate design changes with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
    • Utilize tolerance analysis and ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing principles.
    • Lead design changes through the enterprise change process.
    • Represent Plug Power in a professional manner in all interactions; support the philosophy of the organization to provide high-performing technology to maximize customer satisfaction.
    • Perform all other duties as assigned.
