  • Responsibilities

    Role Objectives: The role of harbor tug Licensed Engineer is to assist the tug Master in the timely, efficient, and orderly operation and management of the company’s tug. All Licensed Engineers must hold the appropriate and unexpired Merchant Mariner Credential, Medical Credential, and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card. The Licensed Engineer must be familiar with and dedicated to the safety, environmental health, security, and maintenance standards of the crew, vessel and company.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Responsible to the master for the timely and proper operation and maintenance of all mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical equipment on the vessel;

    Preparing the engine room to enable the tug to get underway, perform work, or conduct maintenance,

    Monitoring the performance, safety, and cleanliness of the tug, its engine room, auxiliary spaces, major equipment and systems,

    Performing maintenance on all assigned equipment and systems under the direction of master and Marine Superintendent,

    Assisting on deck as needed,

    Taking on fuel and lubes,

    Contributing to unity, good order, and discipline among the crew,

    Training other crewmembers on company policies and procedures,

    Ensuring that company policies and procedures are followed,

    Actively participating in drills, training, company meetings and on board safety evolutions, and enhancing the safety and security posture of the vessel,

    Assisting in vessel orientation for new crewmembers,

    Reporting deficiencies in the vessel or crew to the master and Marine Superintendent,

    Maintaining a professional attitude during operations and whenever dealing with customers, partners or company personnel,

    Other appropriate tasks and duties as may be assigned from time to time by company officials or the master.

    Skill Requirements:

    High mechanical aptitude, and ability to operate computer system for logging and maintenance.

    Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

    Effectiveness in operating and maintaining major equipment such as engines, generators, pumps, valves, piping systems, heating and air conditioning systems, fluid separators, and others,

    Strong in problem solving, responsiveness, spatial orientation, assertiveness,

    Effective social adaptability, interpersonal skills and resilience.

    Knowledge Requirements:

    Vessel operations as would be gained by at least four years of direct, hands-on experience in the Engine Department aboard towing vessels in domestic service, or similar experience,

    Minimum unexpired credential of Designated Duty Engineer (Unlimited). Credential of 3rd Assistant Engineer preferred.

    Education:

    Minimum High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate)

    Bachelors level degree from a state or federal military or maritime academy preferred

    Additional Qualifications:

    TWIC card and driver’s license required,

    Must reside in vicinity of Point Comfort, TX or be willing and able to relocate to that area at own expense. The Greater Houston area is acceptable

    Physical Requirements:

    Worker will exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds of force constantly.

    Requires hearing, talking, grasping quickly, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, crawling and swimming.

    Worker is required to have the ability to see details at a distance and depth perception to judge which of several objects is closer or farther away, or to judge the distance between him/her and an object. Must have normal color vision.

    The worker is subject to environmental conditions with no protection from weather.

    The worker is subject to noise, vibration, hazards, and is frequently in close quarters and small enclosed area and is required to function in small vessels.
