    GENERAL SUMMARY:

    Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, works independently according to established protocols to maintain the Portland Museum of Art’s (PMA’s) buildings and grounds by completing janitorial tasks, event set up and special projects as assigned to ensure fulfillment of museum standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    Performs daily maintenance and cleaning of the museum building, including offices, galleries, restrooms, and other public areas. Duties include floor care and carpet cleaning, window cleaning, painting, dusting, trash removal, recycling, and cleaning and restocking restrooms. Works unsupervised in secure areas of the museum including lower ground floor and outside, using equipment.

    Assists with the setup of tables, chairs, audio-visual equipment, and other materials for museum events, programs, and facility use functions. Staffs events to ensure their proper functioning and assists with event break down and clean up. May also assist with set-up and projectionist responsibilities for PMA Films and other internal and external events.

    Performs routine grounds maintenance, including lawn care and snow removal.

    Changes interior and exterior lighting which may include working near art and wearing fall protection equipment.

    Maintains cleaning logs and records as directed.

    Responds promptly to calls for service from the security personnel and other department managers.

    Chooses and utilizes the proper equipment and/or cleaning products to complete assigned tasks.

    Performs special projects and other related duties as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.

    Complies with all Portland Museum of Art safety rules and procedures.

    Regular attendance at the workplace is required.

    Supports the PMA’s strategic goal to advance a culture of inclusivity and diversity.

    Fosters relationships and builds philanthropy with patrons at the PMA, as defined by displaying behavior that welcomes all individuals contacted in the course of work.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

    None.

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

    High School diploma or equivalent with six months to one year of experience in housekeeping maintenance

    preferred. Valid State of Maine Class C Driver’s License required.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Ability to work effectively with limited supervision.

    Ability to work cooperatively and productively with coworkers.

    Good interpersonal and oral communication skills.

    Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

    Physical ability for operating, repairing, and handling mechanical equipment, and for lifting up to fifty pounds.

    Must be available to work on evenings and weekends, including on-call hours.

    WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Regular attendance at the workplace is required.

    The majority of work is performed in a museum setting or outdoors in all weather conditions. Operates a variety of equipment, including vacuum, carpet cleaner, floor scrubber ride-on, power washer, shovel, rake, and snow blower, following all safety procedures and precautions. Work may involve moderate exposure to hazardous conditions, including loud machinery with moving mechanical parts, cleaning chemicals, solvents, pollens, and fumes. May handle hazardous waste and bio-waste according to established safety procedures. May be required to work at heights using ladders and aerial work platforms. Often required to lift and move objects weighing up to fifty pounds and to stand, walk, bend, and crouch for extended periods.

    TERMS:

    The Maintenance Technician I position is a full-time, full-benefits, non-exempt, hourly, UAW Local 2110 union position with a starting pay rate of $18.82/hr on pay grade B. The schedule will vary depending on the needs of the museum and will include evenings and weekends.
