    EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full Time, Nonexempt

    EFFECTIVE DATE: Immediately - March 31, 2021 (this is a temporary role for a fixed term to cover another employee's maternity leave)

    TYPICAL HOURS REQUIRED: Combination of weekday evenings and weekend shifts

    SHEPHERD'S DOOR  

    Shepherd’s Door is a community of refuge and restoration that cultivates understanding, healing and purpose in the lives of women and children who have suffered from homelessness, addiction and other life traumas. The one-year, Christ-centered residential program integrates addiction recovery, life skills training, vocational development and spiritual growth in a safe, highly relational environment. The ministry team of staff and volunteers serves to model Christ-like living to support the up to 42 women and 25 children participants in achieving lasting transformation.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK

    The Community Life Specialist is responsible to provide Shepherd’s Door (SD) program participants (women and women with children) with continued growth in spiritual formation, addictions recovery, life skills and relationships in the evenings and weekends. The Community Life Specialist will: ensure a Christ-centered atmosphere in the evenings and weekend by facilitating evening devotions, planning and supporting activities and events, hosting volunteer groups/individuals and proactively leading the community towards hope; ensure a calm and relationally healthy atmosphere by addressing conflicts that arise, using growth tools and including all participants into the community; ensure continued growth in life skills by holding participants accountable to program guidelines, supporting moms to parent according to guidelines, and maintaining overall order and safety; ensure implementation of program structure by performing a variety of operational activities such as urinary analysis, room checks, med call, facility checks, and evening schedule oversight.

    THIS IS A TEMPORARY ROLE FOR A FIXED TERM TO COVER ANOTHER EMPLOYEE'S MATERNITY LEAVE.

    ESSENTIAL OUTCOMES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • SD program participants receive a consistent programmatic experience in the evenings and weekends by maintaining program purposes, guidelines, and tone resulting in continued growth of all participants
    • SD program participants receive necessary structure to stay focused in the evenings and weekends through planning and implementing activities, leading the overall schedule, facilitating evening devotions and providing other opportunities for engagement
    • SD program participants develop relationships with individuals and groups from local churches through a variety of volunteer-based activities and events such as Evening Meal Hosting or Bible Studies 
    • SD program participants receive growth in addictions recovery through implementation of necessary growth tools, accountability, compassionate care and consistent invitations to participate
    • SD program and facility operations are maintained to PRM standards through supporting a variety of activities such as UA’s, Med Call, Facility Lock Up and walk-thru, evening meal, vocational duties, visitations, and attendance accountability
    • SD Daytime Program Staff are able to integrate evening participant behaviors into their ministry through Evening Shift Report, effective communication and follow up around significant events

    MINISTERIAL DUTIES

    • Clearly share the Gospel in individual and group settings as women seek spiritual healing and discipleship
    • Maintain a prayerful posture, remaining attentive to the work of the Holy Spirit, following His lead at all times
    • Use biblical principles in addictions recovery, spiritual formation and life skills training so that program participants grow into Christian maturity in all areas of life

    GENERAL FUNCTIONS

    • All program participants, volunteer staff and visitors entering SD consistently experience the Portland Rescue Mission ministry culture of Highly Relational, Christ-Centered, Joyful Servants through modeling, teaching, and encouragement
    • Participants experience lasting relational and spiritual growth through peer-to-peer interactions due to supporting and encouraging of all participants to adopt a life posture of serving others
    • A peaceful and calm atmosphere is cultivated by staff who are actively collaborating through conflict or difficult situations, viewing challenges as opportunities, and serving as examples for all members of the PRM community, especially in regard to resolving personal conflicts promptly
    • Cultivate grateful service by celebrating God’s transformational grace at work in people’s lives and the community
    • SD staff collaborate to discern changes in individual and community health and quickly respond with compassion and wisdom
    • Program participants at SD receive consistent and fruitful spiritual care in compliance with the New Life Ministries manual, foundational ministry principles and strengths-based approach to individual and team growth, resulting in the accomplishment of the PRM Ends Statement
    • SD staff are equipped to participate in the care of each program participant by having access to current information regarding the status of each participant through the use of the available documentation tools (Evening Shift Report, DAP case notes in the Resident Tracker Database)

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • General awareness and knowledge of chemical dependency, addiction recovery and discipleship

    • Experience in Mac and Microsoft Windows software
    • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted
