    EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full Time, Exempt

    EFFECTIVE DATE: December 2020

    TYPICAL HOURS REQUIRED: Monday - Friday days, evenings and weekends as needed based on needs of program participants, on call overnight

    SHEPHERD'S DOOR  

    Shepherd’s Door is a community of refuge and restoration that cultivates understanding, healing and purpose in the lives of women and children who have suffered from homelessness, addiction and other life traumas. The one-year, Christ-centered residential program integrates addiction recovery, life skills training, vocational development and spiritual growth in a safe, highly relational environment. The ministry team of staff and volunteers serves to model Christ-like living to support the up to 42 women and 25 children participants in achieving lasting transformation.

    COMMUNITY PROGRAM  

    The Community Program provides training and support in a neighborhood residence in order to successfully establish independent living and sustain addiction recovery by fostering relational integration into church, recovery and work communities after graduation from Shepherd’s Door.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK

    The Women’s Transition Specialist has primary responsibility for developing Community Program women and women with children to experience continued growth in four communities – church, recovery, work and home so that they will be successful in transitioning to the next community that God is calling them towards while remaining free from addictions. This position will: ensure ongoing growth towards self-sufficiency for all program participants in Community Program for women and women with children through leading various one-on-one, group engagements and volunteer interactions; ensure a safe and hospital program environment through maintaining house operations and program guidelines to PRM standards; foster an environment of relational engagement through collaboration with Community Involvement Manager and the volunteer team so that participants are engaged in a local church and volunteer staff are involved in the lives of program participants.

    This is a live-in position with housing provided. The employee for this role will live in the private, brand new accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on the property. Photos are available upon request. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate pets.

    ESSENTIAL OUTCOMES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Program participants experience continued growth leading to self-sufficiency in their home, church, recovery and work communities through participation in program activities such as weekly all house meetings, one on one meetings and relational interactions with volunteers and church groups
    • Community Program houses maintain a culture of hospitality by utilizing staff housing to model Christian hospitality, partnering with church groups and volunteers for activities in the homes (e.g. meal, bible study), and maintaining a safe and ordered home environment
    • Participants experience continued growth in Christian maturity resulting in active participation in church community, a rich and consistent devotional life and grateful service to others, all done from a love of God and an understanding of His Word.
    • Program participants experience ongoing healthy recovery by continuing practices established at Shepherd’s Door, utilizing peer-to-peer accountability and support, using growth and recovery tools and maintaining a life posture of serving others
    • Each program participant experiences success in the workplace by collaborating with Career and Transition Manager to ensure participant’s Strengths and experiences are well matched to employment, supporting Restoration and Advance program participants with workplace preparation when needed

    MINISTERIAL DUTIES

    • Clearly share the Gospel in individual and group settings as women seek spiritual healing and discipleship.
    • Maintain a prayerful posture, remaining attentive to the work of the Holy Spirit, following His lead at all times.
    • Use biblical principles in addictions recovery, spiritual formation and life skills training so that program participants grow into Christian maturity in all areas of life.
    • All Volunteer Staff are supported in their faith through prayer and discipleship as needed

    GENERAL FUNCTIONS

    • All program participants, volunteer staff and visitors entering SD consistently experience the Portland Rescue Mission ministry culture of Highly Relational, Christ-Centered, Joyful Servants through modeling, teaching, and encouragement.
    • Participants experience lasting relational and spiritual growth through peer-to-peer interactions due to effective training, equipping and encouraging of all participants to adopt a life posture of serving others.
    • Program participants at Community Program for women and women with children receive consistent and fruitful care in compliance with New Life Ministries manual, foundational ministry principles and strengths-based approach to individual and team growth, resulting in the accomplishment of the PRM Ends Statement
    • Oversee weekly house meeting, meet with each participant one on one weekly, and facilitate other meetings as needed. Utilize staff house as one on one and small group meeting space
    • Other New Life Ministries staff are equipped to participate in the ongoing growth of each program participant by having access to current information regarding the progress of each participant through the use of the available documentation tools in the Resident Tracker Database
    • A peaceful and calm atmosphere is maintained by staff who are actively collaborating through conflict or difficult situations, viewing challenges as opportunities, and serving as examples for all members of the PRM community, especially in regard to promptly resolving personal conflicts
    • New Life Ministries Alumni are cared for, engaged with and supported for ongoing recovery and self-sufficiency through monthly gatherings, service opportunities and personal connection as needed
    • Maintain “alumni spreadsheet” tracking recent updates, contact information and current status
    • Program participants feel valued and the neighborhood is positively impacted by maintaining each home through partnering with volunteer groups, the PRM Maintenance team, and the delegation of responsibilities to program participants
    • Program participants experience safety in each home through occasional staff presence, enforcement of guidelines, and by ensuring there are on-call staff available each night
    • Educate Shepherd’s Door program participants about Community Program in order to support full capacity
    • Support work training team with classroom education, activities or meetings in order to prepare New Life Ministries program participants for success in the workplace

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • College degree in related field or experience equivalent
    • Prior Christian ministry experience (volunteer or paid) serving people in a relational manner
    • General awareness and basic knowledge of chemical dependency and addiction recovery
    • A good understanding of the emotional, cognitive and relational challenges of people who are in recovery from addictions
    • Proficient in one on one meetings, small group facilitation, community building, documentation, scheduling and organization
    • Acts with integrity, honesty and knowledge to promote the culture, values and mission of Portland Rescue Mission
    • Ministers as a highly-relational, Christ-centered, joyful servant
    • Prompt and thorough in job performance, self-starter
    • Demonstrated ability to be a team player
    • Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks as assigned
    • Creative and logical problem solving, able to learn quickly
    • Experience in Mac and Microsoft Windows software
    • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted
