    DRIVE AWAY HUNGER

    Drive Away Hunger (DAH) is an enterprise business and fundraising program operated by the Portland Rescue Mission.  For over 20 years, this venture ministry has accepted donated vehicles and reconditioned them into quality, low-cost transportation. The proceeds of the reconditioned vehicles sold go directly back to Portland Rescue Mission, which contributes to funding meals, shelter, and hope for those we serve. Additionally, DAH has become a significant site for vocational training and relevant job experience for participants in our New Life Ministry long-term addiction recovery programs. As an Oregon Auto Dealer, program participants can work in a real-life business setting, observing and being involved in conducting actual business.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ROLE 

    This position requires exceptional interpersonal skills to represent the servanthood of Christ with all they come in contact with. These traits are not only essential in accepting donations and selling cars to customers, it also gives the employee the ability to articulate the purpose of Portland Rescue Mission with each person they come into contact with. The individual in this role will have direct contact with donors, customers, program participants from Portland Rescue Mission’s New Life Ministry programs, staff from various sits, and volunteers and will have the opportunity to learn all aspects of operating the Drive Away Hunger business. Lastly, mentorship and modeling in real-life work situations for vocational program participants in Portland Rescue Mission’s New Life Ministry programs so participants understand the foundation of true success in the workplace will be a key component to this role.

    The best candidate for this role will have a true can-do attitude, a warm demeanor, a demonstrated history of giving exceptional customer service, and an interest in the automotive world. 

    ESSENTIAL OUTCOMES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

    • The lives of the men and women in our New Life Ministry programs will be enriched through discipleship and a deepened understanding of their relationship with God through interacting with spiritually mature staff and volunteers on the DAH team. If these objectives are met, then the monetary success of the business, will be sure to follow.
    • New Life Ministries program participants on the DAH vocation teams experience job readiness training through structured job-like opportunities within the operations of the business. By the end of their service, they will be prepared for future employment and self-sufficiency.
    • Support staff will be knowledgeable and equipped to serve customers, donors, and program participants through receiving ongoing training and gain increasing skills in not only the automotive world but also in enhanced skills and effectiveness of vocational training.
    • Vendors feel valued by their interactions with Facilities staff, leading to strong relationships, favorable pricing and/or accelerated service time frames for DAH goals.
    • Customers and donors are welcomed in a winsome and informative manner.
    • Donors and customers understand the significance of DAH to Portland Rescue Mission and the vital role that their patronage plays in that result.
    • Donors, customers, employees, and program participants enjoy a presentable and safe environment at DAH through organized and well-presented retail and wholesale lots.
    • Vehicles are prepared for the weekly in-house or offsite auctions or for towing to a recycler.
    • The Office Lead or General Manager are backed up and supported with donations, cashiering, or offsite errands.

    GENERAL FUNCTIONS 

    • Ensure that DAH is clean and facilities are safe
    • Engage in daily prayer with the DAH team
    • Ensure a welcoming and grateful environment for donors
    • Demonstration of exceptional customer service skills is required
    • Bilingual English/Spanish language preferred but not required

    MINISTERIAL DUTIES

    • Share a clear message of the Gospel when opportunities arise in day-to-day interactions with program participants or members of the community
    • Prayerfully disciple program participants on the DAH vocation team
    • Model consistent interpersonal skills as a highly relational, Christ-centered, joyful servant

    In this and any position with Portland Rescue Mission, it is impossible to predict the many requests and assignments that can and will be made on an employee.  Flexibility and a cooperative spirit are crucial characteristics of the person who holds this important position and for the successful operation of Portland Rescue Mission services.
