    THE OPERATIONS TEAM

    The Operations Department at Portland Rescue Mission (PRM) is a group of dedicated professionals using their operational skills for life-changing Christian ministry. Our goal is to participate in what God is doing in the lives of the men, women and children we serve at PRM with integrity and excellence. In doing this, we honor the high calling of serving those in need, knowing that excellent resource management and accountability create a sustainable environment in which our ministry can flourish. The best candidate will have a heart for serving people in the name of Jesus and skills that support best practices within our facilities and warehouse/transportation infrastructures.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK

    The Facilities Assistant is responsible for ensuring all Portland Rescue Mission (PRM) program participants, guests, staff, volunteers and visitors experience safe and hospitable environments that are conducive to giving hope and restoring life by properly maintaining, improving and beautifying all PRM facilities and grounds. This position will: perform skilled maintenance, repairs, and minor construction; provide vocational training experiences to New Life Ministries program participants through structured involvement in the facilities team; partner with the volunteer department in order to leverage volunteer resources and create meaningful interactions between program participants and volunteers; steward PRM resources by thoughtful decision making and leveraging community resources and business partnerships.

    ESSENTIAL OUTCOMES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • All PRM program participants, guests, staff, volunteers and visitors experience safe and hospitable environments as the Facilities Assistant follows PRM quality standards and works according to maintenance and repair best practices in collaboration with Facilities Manager.
    • Ensure that PRM operations and program delivery is unhindered and maximized by promptly and professionally responding to all facility requests through clear communication and effective task management, anticipating potential problems when possible.
    • New Life Ministries program participants on the facilities vocation team experience job readiness training by providing them with structured job-like opportunities, managing them using a Strengths-based approach, and developing them so that they are prepared for future employment and self-sufficiency. 
    • Provide engaging volunteer service activities and community or business involvement whenever possible so that PRM stewards its resources and the community is mobilized to serve.
    • Create a Christ-centered work environment where New Life program participants and volunteers serve together, interacting in meaningful ways so that all grow in faith and mutual transformation.
    • Ensure excellent project completion by cultivating relationships with contractors and vendors and maintaining consistency in communication, expectations, and professionalism.

    MINISTERIAL DUTIES

    • Share a clear message of the Gospel when opportunities arise in day-to-day interactions with program participants or members of the community.
    • Prayerfully disciple participants in the facilities vocation.
    • Model consistent interpersonal skills as a highly relational, Christ-centered individual.

    GENERAL FUNCTIONS

    Perform duties which fall into a variety of light commercial and residential trades, including but not limited to:

    • Carpentry
    • Painting
    • Plumbing
    • Electrical
    • Mechanical
    • Energy management
    • Fire and Life Safety
    • Security

    Act with integrity towards staff, guests, contractors, volunteers, and program participants.

    Manage the ever-growing list of tasks and responsibilities with patience and graciousness.

    Maintain a loving spirit towards every person encountered. 

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

    • College degree in related field or experience equivalent
    • Working knowledge of the trades
    • Prompt and thorough in job performance, self-starter
    • Demonstrated ability to be a team player
    • Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks as assigned
    • Creative and logical problem solving, able to learn quickly
    • Experience in Mac and Microsoft Windows software
    • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted

    OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

    In this and any position with Portland Rescue Mission, it is impossible to predict the many requests and assignments that can and will be made on an employee.  Flexibility and a cooperative spirit are crucial characteristics of the person who holds this important position and for the successful operation of Portland Rescue Mission services.
