    SHEPHERD'S DOOR  

    Shepherd’s Door is a community of refuge and restoration that cultivates understanding, healing and purpose in the lives of women and children who have suffered from homelessness, addiction and other life traumas. The 13 month, Christ-centered residential program integrates addiction recovery, life skills training, vocational development and spiritual growth in a safe, highly relational environment. The ministry team of staff and volunteers serves to model Christ-like living to support the up to 42 women and 25 children participants in achieving lasting transformation.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION

    The Women’s Recovery Counselor (Growth Leader) is responsible for leading the Christ-centered growth of a family group of program participants (around 15 women) through direct care and the mobilization of Shepherd’s Door (SD) staff, volunteers, churches and the general community. Each family group participant will experience growth in all aspects of the program – spiritual formation, relationships, addictions recovery, life skills, vocation and parenting (as needed). This position will: ensure ongoing holistic growth of a family group of program participants by providing discipleship, recovery counseling and program delivery so that participants appropriately progress through each phase of the program; create a culture of transformation through encouragement and accountability by equipping the Shepherd’s Door community in effective peer to peer relational interactions; involve and mobilize Shepherd’s Door staff, churches, volunteer mentors and other outside support in the growth process so that each program participant receives long-term freedom from harmful addictions.

    ESSENTIAL OUTCOMES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Family group program participants receive consistent and fruitful care in compliance with the New Life Ministries manual, foundational ministry principles and strengths-based approach to individual and team growth, resulting in the accomplishment of the PRM Ends Statement
    • SD staff are equipped to participate in the ongoing growth of each program participant by receiving current and clear communication, direction and coordination through the use of DAP case notes, growth plan, program workflow (Resident Tracker Database), and weekly Participant Review meeting
    • Family group program participants make consistent progress in all areas of program – Christian maturity, recovery, life skills, relationships, vocation, parenting (as needed) – with the goal of successfully completing the Restoration program within time frame allowed
    • Family group program participants identify, address, and experience freedom in their core struggles while also identifying, cultivating and leveraging their core strengths by utilizing the New Life growth tools, peer-to-peer interactions, CliftonStrengths and other resources
    • Family group participants experience appropriate and timely phase advancement by integrating SD staff in discerning the phase advancement of each family group participant as defined by the growth plan and workflow checklist
    • Family group program participants experience acceptance, fellowship and service opportunities in a local church community, the mentorship of a well-suited mature Christian volunteer staff and integration into outside recovery support communities in order to support their long-term Christian maturity, recovery and self-sufficiency

    MINISTERIAL DUTIES

    • Clearly share the Gospel in individual and group settings as women seek spiritual healing and discipleship.
    • Maintain a prayerful posture, remaining attentive to the work of the Holy Spirit, following His lead at all times.
    • Use biblical principles in addictions recovery, spiritual formation and life skills training so that program participants grow into Christian maturity in all areas of life.
    • Support Volunteer Staff in their faith and service through prayer, discipleship and training as needed

    GENERAL FUNCTIONS

    • Interact with all program participants, volunteer staff and visitors entering SD in a way that consistently reflects the Portland Rescue Mission ministry culture of Highly Relational, Christ-Centered, Joyful Servants
    • Provide effective peer-to-peer training, equipping and encouraging to program participants so that they experience lasting relational and spiritual growth and adopt a life posture of serving others.
    • Cultivate a peaceful and calm atmosphere by actively collaborating with staff through conflict or difficult situations, viewing challenges as opportunities, and serving as examples for all members of the PRM community, especially in regard to promptly resolving personal conflicts
    • Collaborate with SD staff to discern changes in individual and community health and quickly respond with compassion and wisdom
    • Support the learning of all SD participants through classes and groups by utilizing New Life Ministries curriculum and strategies according to the needs of the community
    • Support ministry coverage at Shepherd’s Door, being available for necessary program operations (e.g. UA/BA, exits, med call, crisis counseling)
    • Daily enter case notes and track participant progress in Resident Tracker database
    • Participate in weekly “triage” and “participant review” meetings by providing insight and direction to other staff regarding necessary care for program participants in family group
    • Manage participant absence request forms by utilizing outlook calendar
    • Equip SD volunteer staff mentors to cultivate relational and spiritual growth of program participants
    • Work in collaboration with New Life Ministries Growth Team to establish consistent practices and care
    • Participate in Portland Rescue Mission special events, meetings and retreats.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Alcohol/drug certification required (CADC I minimum, CADC II or above preferred).
    • College degree in related field or experience equivalent
    • Excellent knowledge of Christian spiritual formation, chemical dependency, addiction recovery and counseling specific to relapse prevention
    • Acts with integrity, honesty and knowledge to promote the culture, values and mission of Portland Rescue Mission
    • Ministers as a highly relational Christ-centered joyful servant.
    • Proficient in communication, documentation, organization, scheduling and group and classroom participation
    • Experience in using a database and case notes
    • Prompt and thorough in job performance, self-starter
    • Demonstrated ability to be a team player
    • Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks as assigned
    • Creative and logical problem solving, able to learn quickly
    • Experience in Mac and Microsoft Windows software
    • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted
