    Principal Electrical Engineer
    Eden Prairie, MN | $130,000-$150,000 | Direct-Hire | Onsite

    The Principal Electrical Engineer plays a key role in shaping new embedded hardware products by translating requirements into robust architectures, developing detailed circuit designs, and ensuring solutions are manufacturable, reliable, and aligned with customer expectations. This position functions as a senior technical contributor and mentor within the engineering department, guiding best practices and supporting the development of next-generation embedded platforms.

    Key Responsibilities

    Project and Design Leadership

    • Lead complex electrical design efforts and contribute to the evolution of departmental design standards.
    • Translate product requirements into practical and scalable hardware architectures.
    • Direct, support, and review the work of other electrical design engineers as needed.
    • Participate in or lead proposal efforts, contributing technical content and integrating requirements into customer deliverables.

    Detailed Circuit and System Design

    • Perform hands-on design of embedded platforms, including microprocessor circuits, digital subsystems, analog interfaces, and power circuitry.
    • Create schematics using CAD tools such as OrCAD or Altium.
    • Run simulations and analyses using software such as SPICE or HyperLynx to validate design assumptions.
    • Conduct component evaluations and design trade-off analyses to ensure manufacturability, cost control, and reliability.

    Documentation, Verification, and Compliance

    • Prepare technical documentation including verification reports, rework instructions, routing and placement guidelines, and engineering analyses.
    • Maintain a complete and controlled design history using version management systems.
    • Support compliance activities by generating reports for REACH, RoHS, PFAS, and similar regulatory standards.
    • Assist with development and routing of Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).

    Cross-Functional Collaboration and Mentorship

    • Coordinate with other engineers across electrical, mechanical, software, and systems disciplines to ensure cohesive project execution.
    • May act as a project leader to keep schedules, budgets, and deliverables on track.
    • Mentor engineering peers by providing design guidance and helping resolve technical obstacles.

    Lifecycle and Sustaining Support

    • Monitor component obsolescence and evaluate alternative parts as necessary.
    • Contribute to design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-test (DFT) activities to streamline production processes.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent technical field.
    • 12+ years of electronic product design experience.
    • Strong experience with embedded system design, including microprocessor-based hardware.
    • Broad knowledge of electrical product development, including requirements analysis, schematic design, documentation, verification, DFM, and DFT.
    • Demonstrated history of leading multidisciplinary teams or technical project groups.
    • Hands-on experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and network analyzers.
    • Working understanding of serial interfaces such as SPI, I2C, and UART.
    • Experience with simulation tools and analog design concepts.
    • Familiarity with RF technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cellular is preferred.
    • Understanding of high-speed digital interfaces (DDR, PCIe, SATA) is a plus.
    • Experience developing products within regulated industries, such as medical, is desirable.
    • Proficiency with MS Office applications, including MS Project.
    • Ability to collaborate with internal teams as well as direct customer contacts.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including creation of engineering templates, specifications, and technical proposals.
    • Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving environment with shifting priorities and customer-driven timelines.
