Overview New Gen is dedicated to empowering secondary-age youth by providing supportive, skill-building opportunities that prepare them for post-secondary educational opportunities, employment, and independence. The mission of the program is to help young people gain the tools, social networks, and competencies they need to thrive.
Through weekly curriculum sessions, hands-on experiences, guest speaker series, and community-based opportunities, participants will strengthen their literacy, numeracy, social-emotional, entrepreneurial, and life skills while also gaining exposure to employment and higher education pathways.
The Program Assistant supports the New Gen Coordinator, and two classroom teachers in supervising the daily programming plans and group activities as coordinated. The person in the role must embody Peter Paul’s values and share a passion for the mission by overseeing a high quality, safe experience for all students. All Peter Paul employees are expected to maintain high expectations for self, colleagues, students and families and must maintain a professional, ethical and responsible attitude to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
Primary Responsibilities
Help supervise students throughout the daily arrival, departure, and dismissal routines as part of the New Gen afterschool program
Promote workforce and independent living skills development in teens through enforcing skills learned via program provider instruction
Assist in the implementation of New Gen’s succession planning programming via enforcement of student/classroom/parent expectations
Commitment to total classroom engagement via the daily arrival, departure, and dismissal routines as part of the New Gen afterschool program
Participate in staff meetings and professional development as scheduled
Supervise students during scheduled external programming, sustaining site-sound-and supervision
Perform additional duties as assigned
Required use of clock-in/out system as well as other internal platforms that help to support daily functions of the New Gen program.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent; or currently enrolled in college courses
Experience working with school age students
Strong classroom management and organization skills
Excellent oral, verbal and written communication skills
Understanding of and familiarity working in an urban setting
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in education (preferred)
Experience working in the Virginia Standards of Learning
Subject matter expertise in science, technology, engineering, art or math
Position Schedule This is a part-time, hourly position that is expected to work starting September 5 through May 29,2025. All After-school Promise employees can expect to work from 2pm-6pm Monday-Friday.
