Puentes Hacia el Futuro is an after-school program for children grades 1-8 in the South Philadelphia Latinx immigrant community. This program was developed and piloted in 2017 and officially incorporated into Puentes de Salud’s education programming in the fall of 2018. In July 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the program lost funding/staffing and remained active in a limited state. The Fall of 2022 was its year of return to in-person programming which allowed for it to benefit from 1:1 tutoring/mentorship. This school year we are implementing tutoring time with the help of volunteers and a PHF intern. This year we are piloting a new program called Pasaporte Cultural. Students will learn about different countries in Latin America and engage in different activities that represent each country.
Position Description:
This fall, we plan to offer the program, Pasaporte Cultural, once a week to students in 5th and 6th grade. This role will take place in person at Southwark Elementary School in South Philadelphia one afternoon per week. The facilitator will be responsible for leading the after school lessons in each country. They will follow an outlined curriculum and contribute to the creation of mini lessons that will be taught. Mini lessons will be around 15 minutes, followed by an activity (crafts, art, sport or game) that represents the country of the day. This is a paid part-time ( maximum 6 hours per week) position as it requires outside coordination and leading the facilitation of a workshop with about 21 participants max.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Participate in after-school programming on Tuesdays from 3:00-6:00 pm. This time will include half an hour of 1:1 or small student-to-volunteer ratio academic tutoring. This time will also include being the key workshop facilitator for an hour and a half long workshop, leading the facilitation of 15 students in grades 5-6
Support with student supervision during arrival to program, snack, group transitions, program activities, and dismissal
Support with classroom management using restorative practices
Meet each program day to collaboratively prepare for and debrief with Education Supervisor and PHF intern, as well as, a group of volunteers
Meet virtually with PHF Education Supervisor to discuss week-to-week planning
Contribute to overall program evaluation and growth through ongoing reflection and feedback
Foster positive relationships with students and support ongoing student voice and leadership development
Tutoring Qualifications:
Bilingual (Spanish/English) oral and written, native speaker preferred
Experience tutoring elementary-aged students
Experience working with immigrant communities preferred
Strong written and verbal communication skills to support effective teamwork and programming
Workshop Qualifications:
Interest in Latin American countries and culture
Interest in helping build a community-based preventive care program from the ground up
Self-driven individual who takes initiative
Willingness to learn
Interest in mentoring elementary students
Prior experience working with elementary students, preferred but not required
Prior mentoring experience, preferred but not required
Program Schedule:
The program will run every Tuesday or Monday, from September 9th through November 18th, 2025; Monday program dates- November 3 and 10, 2025
Programming will take place weekly at Southwark Elementary School; 1835 S Ninth St, Philadelphia, PA 19148
