Property Accountant (Staff Accountant – Real Estate)
Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Property Accountant (Staff Accountant) with experience in real estate accounting to join our growing finance team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting functions for a portfolio of commercial and/or residential properties while ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance with accounting standards. This position requires a strong understanding of property accounting, financial reporting, reconciliations, and general ledger management.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for assigned properties.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure all transactions are recorded accurately.
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Record journal entries, accruals, and account adjustments.
- Reconcile tenant accounts, security deposits, CAM charges, and rental income.
- Assist with month-end and year-end close processes.
- Review and process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions related to assigned properties.
- Prepare budget-to-actual variance reports and assist with annual budgeting.
- Coordinate with property managers to resolve accounting discrepancies and provide financial support.
- Assist with external audits and tax preparation by providing required documentation.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
- Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required).
- 2+ years of accounting experience, including experience in real estate or property accounting.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and general accounting principles.
- Experience with property management/accounting software such as Yardi, MRI, AppFolio, RealPage, or similar systems is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience accounting for commercial and/or multifamily real estate portfolios.
- Knowledge of CAM reconciliations, lease accounting, and fixed assets.
- CPA or CPA candidate is a plus, but not required.
