Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Days Per Diem - Mineola. In this role, the successful Nurse Practitioner uses clinical expertise to plan the delivery of safe, therapeutic, population-specific patient care through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. With the patient and family central to the care, incorporates the unique characteristics and needs of each patient and family member into the plan of care. Works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team to promote wellness and optimize patient outcomes.
Job Responsibilities:
Additional Position Specific Responsibilities:
1. Behavioral Emergency Response Team
Serve as the clinical lead for BERT, responding promptly to behavioral health crises across general medical hospital and ED settings.
Coordinate rapid crisis response efforts with BERT team members.
Conduct on-the-spot psychiatric assessments and lead de-escalation strategies.
Collaborate with nursing, medical, and security staff to stabilize patients and ensure the safety of all involved.
Assist in the development, refinement, and implementation of BERT protocols, training materials, and evidence-based practices.
2. Psychiatric Consultation & Clinical Management
Deliver psychiatric consultations for patients with behavioral health needs across medical-surgical, critical care, and emergency settings.
Evaluate and manage acute psychiatric symptoms, including agitation, psychosis, suicidality, substance use disorders, and delirium.
Initiate, adjust, and manage psychotropic medications and deliver brief therapeutic interventions.
Accurately document assessments, treatment plans, and clinical decisions in EPIC.
3. Proactive Rounding & Behavioral Risk Mitigation
Conduct daily proactive rounds in hospital units and the ED to identify patients at risk for behavioral escalation or emerging mental health concerns.
Detect early signs of deterioration and implement preventive and safety strategies.
Collaborate with unit teams to create and implement individualized behavioral care plans.
4. Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Staff Education
Build strong, collaborative relationships with medical, nursing, security, and ancillary teams.
Provide education and coaching on behavioral health topics, including trauma-informed care, psychiatric evaluation, and de-escalation techniques.
Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, discharge planning, and care coordination meetings.
Serve as a liaison between psychiatry and other departments, enhancing continuity and integration of behavioral health care.
5. Program Development & Quality Improvement
Participate in the ongoing development and optimization of BERT protocols and consultation workflows.
Collect, monitor, and analyze data on BERT activations, outcomes, and trends to inform program enhancements.
Support quality improvement initiatives, policy development, and staff training focused on behavioral health care delivery and patient safety.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Master's Degree graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program Required. Current NYS Registered Nurse License Required. Current NYS Nurse Practitioner License Required. Current Nurse Practitioner Certification Required. Excellent communication skills (both oral & written), interpersonal and organization skills Required. Basic Computer skills Required.
Basic Life Support Certification through the American Heart Association.
For Ostomy, WOCN Certification required within 2 years of hire..
Required Licenses: Registered Nurse License-NYS, Nurse Practitioner-NYS, Basic Life Support Cert
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS, PALS) through the American Heart Association or Neonatal Resuscitation certification (NRP) through the American Academy of Pediatrics may be required based on your selected privileges.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
