  • Responsibilities

    SUMMARY The Director, Advancement Special Events is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising events program, targeting alumni giving and engagement and focused on creating numerous engagement points for alumni and donors. This position involves a high level of contact and collaboration with individuals inside and outside the law school.               

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    Plan, implement, and promote a robust fundraising events program, including ticketed and non-ticketed events, that supports the law school's strategic plan and fundraising goals in collaboration with colleagues throughout the law school.

     

    Oversee the production and logistics for all fundraising events, including event timelines, program development, venue selection and site visits, collateral materials, data management, RSVP management, catering, volunteer coordination, and event‐day logistics.

     

    Annually plan a creative, engaging, and successful gala that serves as recurring signature event for the law school and encourages alumni to connect with the organization in a meaningful and sustained way.

     

    In partnership with colleagues in Marketing and Communications, develop persuasive and engaging program content that highlights the law school’s points of pride and helps to deepen relationships with donors and alumni.

     

    Work closely and professionally with fundraising event volunteers at each step in the process, ensuring proper communication regarding event goals, responsibilities and post event follow‐up.

     

    Prepare and manage budgets for each fundraising event, as well as produce progress reports on ROI for regular review by the Dean, the VP of Advancement and Alumni Engagement, and event chairs and/or event volunteers.

     

    Establish strong relationships with vendors, and negotiate vendor contracts professionally and within strict budgetary parameters.

     

    Work closely with Finance and Accounting to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting for all relevant IRS reporting.

     

    Travel when needed to facilitate alumni activities and fundraising events, and to promote the law school’s needs.

     

    Advocate for the law school with in-depth knowledge of institutional priorities, points of pride, plans, and the facets of its higher education mission; learn and communicate in compelling terms the strategic vision for the law school and the power of scholarship.

     

    Maintain up-to-date knowledge of organizational programs and priorities; be equipped to represent all of the law school’s giving and engagement opportunities.

     

    Adhere to established protocols, such as the law school gift acceptance policy.

     

    Ensure reporting requirements are completed in timely and accurate manner; utilize automated systems for tracking and reporting.

     

    Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with appreciation for the importance of complete protection of the privacy of alumni, donors, and prospects.

     

    Flexibility and initiative, as well as the ability to work independently, combined with the skills for thriving in a team environment to achieve institutional goals.

     

    Proficiency in Raiser's Edge or a similar constituent database.

     

    Complies with all aspects of the law school’s Customer Service Standards.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

    Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree appreciated. Minimum seven years of experience in special events, events management, or alumni engagement required. Experience in an institution of higher education, or an environment of similar complexity, is preferred. Experience and/or interest in the law or legal education, and ability to effectively represent the mission of South Texas College of Law Houston.                                      

     

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively and professionally communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to students, alumni, clients, and other employees of the organization.                                       

     

    MATHEMATICS SKILLS

    Ability to perform basic math essentials                                             

     

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to define routine problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to solve routine problems and/or deal with a variety of variables in situations, especially when department head may be out of office or unavailable. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
